ok, I know it's not normal for the screen to even blackout for less than half a second while you are working on the computer, but that's exactly what it does, the screen will go black for less than half a second and come back at very random time. and it's not a timeout because of inactivity. I am just wondering if this is just my computer defective or it's a windows vista thing or even a FE8xx thing? Anyone care to comment about their experience on FE or possible other series? Maybe I outa exchange this unit or something.

My wife reported the same thing on a FE880E we purchased less than a week ago. She is concerned. Could it be a software setup issue or hardware one?
-
I have it too when I boot it up with Vista. I don't think there is anything to worry about. I think it is just Vista loading up the drivers.

happens when my SZ changes screens
ex: open and close the laptop a few times
Ex: press ctrl alt delete
im worried... -
are you guys charging the battery while plugged in.
it could be that the wall adaptor isn't stable.... causing you to switch to battery. this occurs when you have different settings for plugged in/battery. for instance different color bit settings. -
It must be "normal" for the Sony Vaio FE880 because I'm on my second brand new one in just over a week. The first one I bought last week did that. It would just black out and come back on in the blink of an eye. At first I thought it was me that my eye sight was going bad! I took it back to Best Buy and showed them. They thought that was strange and replaced it with a second new Vaio FE880. I was all excited, got it home, and viola..the second one does the same thing. It's very annoying. I will be back there on Monday to replace the Sony with a different brand. It's a beautiful computer but I'm worried about other problems down the road. I've been searching the net to find others who have had the same problem. I've printed out the comments on this posting to show them at Best Buy. AND when I was showing the Geek Squad at Best Buy what is was doing, we didn't have the power adapter plugged in..it was only running on battery power.

I just decided not to deal with the Sony; I got on line and ordered a new HP dv6000t, with bluetooth tech. and it only cost me $8 more than the Sony with my GM/HP employee discount. I use an HP xw8000 workstation, at work, to run Unigraphics 3D solids modeling; and I have a Compaq Presario at home and never have had a problem with either. Good luck on your black out problem.

I think it is not the computer problem but Vista.
-
Notebook Deity: it doesn't just happen when you boot up..it happens randomly, and constantly while working on the notebook. It's like it just shuts down and comes back on again in an instant, about every 10 minutes... and is very annoying.

I'll try Vista on the new HP and see if it does the same thing. I'll let you all know.
-
yup, it doesn't only happen when you are booting up, but rather it's when you are working on the computer and it will just blink in an instant. If we are all having the same problem, then I really wouldn't worry about it. Hopefully Sony will release a firmware that fixes the problem. Maybe I should load Windows XP and see what happens?

hey guys i think that im having a very similar problem. I think that it is related to Windows Vista, and not the computer. I recently upgraded my operating system and my computer never used to do this before when i had XP.
My problem might be a little different tho. Rather than blinking out for a split second it will blink over and over again, and then eventually go completely black. I can still use the computer, and everything loads and operates fine, it is just the screen. In order to stop the problem i have to turn the computer off and then reboot it. Any ideas? I personally think that is a driver problem with vista and the video card. -
I took my Sony back to Best Buy and the geek squad fixed it by updating the video card driver. The driver I had was dated Nov. 06 and they updated it to March 07. It seems to work fine now. They gave me an extra week to exchange it if I start having those same problems.

maybe I should have search this forum before I made my thread. I'm having a similar problem with my N series. I'm hoping its Vista's fault and not my laptop.

When I took my new Sony back to Best Buy, they gave me a really hard time about returning it. They updated the driver and it was okay..so I kept it..didn't really have much choice (which ticked me off). I'll think twice about buying anything from Best Buy again in my life. So here I sit, with a ton of papers to write and my Sony Vaio took a dump. I turned it on, the screen went black, the batter won't charge and I'm furious. I have 4 days worth of business seminar information on that thing that I need. I can't even open the CD drawer to get the CD out. I'm hoping it's a bad battery. Sooo...it's back to Best Buy tomorrow. I hate this computer but glad I bought the two year service plan..I have a feeling I'm gonna need it.
Occasional screen black for split of a second on FE890 Normal?
