I had a really strange problem with the display last night.

Since I rarely game on the Z11, I've been running in stamina mode pretty much all the time. Last night, when I resumed from standby, the display started to flicker. The LCD would effectively blink about twice a second and after about 30 seconds, a purple verticle line appeared on the right side.

I cleanly rebooted the machine and the issue subsided. I haven't been able to reproduce the problem this morning.

I've got a clean install and have been running on it for weeks, issue free.

Now, I have been dorking around with the video card drivers in support of the Optimus driver thread, but this is the first time I've had trouble. If it happens again, I will reinstall.

    Anybody else see this?

I notice similar sort of flickers (when there's movement on the screen the LCD flicker) after switching between Speed and Stamina mode (Auto ON). I logged off and on again and the issue resolved.

I too have had a similar issue.

DHGS was set to Auto (SPEED).

Was using IE8 and posting on a forum. Went off AC and DHGS (Auto) switch to Stamina. Every key press while typing in IE8 resulted in flicker (for every key press!).

Going back on AC power didn't resolve the issue. Reboot did.

That's slightly different as I'm not switching modes.

The only expected flickers should be when the GPU is switched or when color depth or refresh rate is changed.

Does the flickering continue indefinitely? Are you dropping the refresh rate in Stamina mode?

I think I have the problem same with you. I restart my laptop so far nothing happen. I think it could be driver problem over the switching.

Mine is not the flickers that happens when the GPU is switched. The issue occurs AFTER the switch and continues indefinitely until I log on/off. I did not drop refresh rate in Stamina mode.

It's a clean install. You think it's related to drivers issue?

Agreed. I probably wasn't descriptive enough. What I am describing is the behavior after the switch (and the initial screen flicker).

Yes it does continue indefinitely until reboot, though I did not try a logout (not sure that would have mattered).

Refresh rate is static @ 60Hz for either card.

I can't reproduce the problem at will. The first time it happened was yesterday. Never had it happen before or since under same conditions.

Mine is a clean install as well using the drivers from the recovery CD's with the exception of the components that comprise the "Notebook Utilities" from Sony's website.

Dunno. I'd definitely install the Notebook Utilities. This is where you get the VAIO control center, amongst other things.

Only major package I don't install is the VAIO Application Launcher. It includes Sony's Media Center and Media Plus apps, amongst 10 or 15 other smaller supporting applications. I don't use them. I don't use the term bloatware for these apps, but people some might.

LOL. I think I really need to read and re-read my posts sometimes. Not sure what is up with my head today. :err:

What I meant to say in my post was that I didn't install components individually that make up the "Notebook Utilities". I instead opted to install NBU as it seems to handle things perfectly.

    Sorry about that.
