I saw the z555 here in Ottawa at two different sony stores. It looks pretty nice and it is very light. The keyboard felt comfortable and the machine was cool and quiet. I didn't notice any diagonal lines that people were talking about. I also didn't get a chance to see the battery life as they removed the batteries from the demos.

Strangely, the resolution in the display setting says 1600x900 while I thought only the Z590CTO has that resolution (z555 and z540CTO had 1366x768).

I work near a Sony store, so of course I'm checking the Sony store fairly regularly. I'll try to take pictures of the Z555 as soon as I get the chance to see it. The guy told me last time that you can put 20% down to reserve one if you like, because many stores already have waiting lists and will likely sell out of their initial shipment almost immediately. Shouldn't be more than a few days now guys until these units start hittin stores.

One of the sales guys at the Sony store showed me his computer screen and basically seemed pretty confident that these laptops would be in most stores in this area before the end of next week. This one seemed like he actually knew what he was talking about, but who knows.. Regardless of when they actually hit stores, we all know that the wait is just going to be a little bit longer.

How does their commission work, anyways? Is it tied into whether or not they are able to sell an extended warranty? When I purchased a camcorder over five years ago, I remember that the sales clerk was relentless into getting me to purchase one of their extended warranties and he even gave me a big discount on it for getting one.

Lol, thinking about it now, every time I go into the Sony store I get handed a different business card.. Their commission must be pretty good!

    The Z555 comes with a 256mb video card? I didn't know that.
So the Z540 comes with a 128mb and then Z555 and Z590 come with 256mb?

It sure does, and yes the Z540 comes with only 128mb video while the Z590 comes with 256mb. Difference is preconfig (Made in Japan) vs CTO (Made in U.S or either China)

Acutally the manager I bought it from, he's done at 5pm, and im stuck at work till 5pm lol. So decided im gonna go pick it up this Wednasday. Sorry I didn't ask if they had extra stock, but I can tell you that Yorkdale mall and some other stores in Missuaga and East end had stock. About 10 for each store. They will not hold it for you as its a new product, so dont even bother. Actually by now all stores should have it.

Ok, so I got to see & hold one in person. TorontoGuy, you will not be disappointed! It lived up to my high expectations, it's a great looking machine -- light, & compact. It was a bit thicker than I thought it would be, but that's not a big deal, we knew it wasn't going to be MacBook Air thin. I had zero issues with the keyboard -- for me, personally, I don't think it would require any adjustment at all. I didn't get to turn it on, they had just gotten it & it wasn't plugged in.

Overall, it was the compactness that impressed me -- the fact that the screen sits lower, meaning that it might be easier to use in a plane, and it might be less obtrusive when you're in a meeting with someone & you have it in front of you (& knowing that it's got great CPU horsepower etc, despite how compact it is).

I was almost tempted to buy one on the spot, except a) I think I'd want the 1600x900 screen, and I'd have to get a CTO model for that, and b) I'm back to the same issue I had before, which is that my 4-year old Vaio S170 is perfectly fine, and I don't know if I can really justify almost $3k (the CTO model with the options I want, the dock, sleeve, spare adapter, plus taxes etc..) on a new laptop... but I have to say, this is the first Vaio that's really tempted me since my S. This'll be my next notebook, it's a question of whether I get it now or in a few more months.

I finally got to see it in person at the sony store today. It's a great laptop. It looks amazing and the 1600 x 900 it not hard to read at all. I'm going to order mine very soon on CTO. It is a great laptop.

It's the Z555DN. You can check the specs on sonystyle.ca. Basically it's the lower res screen, 3gb ram, 250gb 5400rpm drive, 2.4ghz cpu, 256mb graphics card. Personally I'd want the higher res screen and 200gb 7200 rpm drive.

If it was 1600x900 it would be super-tiny (supposedly same dpi as the TZ roughly) & if it wasn't, then it would be more like other notebooks. So *was* it super-tiny?

It was tiny. I went with my friend and he said how can you read that! But for me it wasn't a big deal, I liked it.
Trust me it was 1600 x 900. It was wide screen and everything. I would have to be stupid for mistaking 1366 x 768. The next resolution down was 1268 x 768 like I said earlier.

I mean to be honest, I would not be suprised cuz when I saw it myself, it was superrr tiny. Im hoping its not a 1600x res cuz I find it way too small for my liking.

Just to let people here know that many Vancouver area Sony stores have received their z's in. I got a call this morning, but I won't have the time to go and see it myself until Friday. According to the salesman, most of the stores are already sold out..

I went to the SonySTyle store at Leaside, as suggest by TorontoGuy. The saleman said it is 1280x768, he went to some place to check it. But I access the screen resolution, and it says 1600x900. Showed the salesman, and he said maybe their documentation is not up to date. Also, it is in stock.
