5.) There is however one driver which must go on a usb pen drive or external HD, and thats the Intel AHCI SATA controller. After extracting the contents of its installer package you'll notice there is no functioning installer. Thats because the driver is stored in inf files and as such requires a manual installation. To make this clear YOU WILL NEED THESE FILES TO LOAD THE SATA CONTROLLER INTO THE WINDOWS INSTALLATION, OTHERWISE YOUR INSTALL WILL FAIL!!!!

Is this only true for the FW? I didnt do this during the clean install of my SR..

Chances are then you didn't need to. If you don't do it on the FW you will get the blue screen of death upon installing Vista.

Anyone got any thoughts on my problems/questions (last page)?

    Hey guys,
thanks a lot for your great guide - just did a clean 64bit install on my german FW11ZU. Everything is working fine, except of the display switch (FN + F7). All other FN-Keys like display brightness are working fine with OSD, but nothing happens when I connect an external monitor through VGA-out and press FN + F7.
Do you may have some ideas how to solve this?

    Cheers

    hello guys

    I have some noob questions!
Can I just type in the windows key labeld on the back of my vaio when installing vista, or do I have to recover it and all that crap using this guide http://directedge.us/node/24 ?
I also wonder if I can take the same drivers that are posted in the guide for my Swedish fw21z? ( would they work if I for exampele would like to install a 64x xp on my laptop aswell?)

what's your opinion should I even bother installing a xp 64x or go for vista 64, talking perfromance.

    thanks in advance!

Mickels: you can use the key on the base of your laptop yes. but i think all keys like that need to be activated over the phone (they did on xp machines anyway).

instead of using that key, doing some of "all that crap" listed on the website you mentioned makes it alot easier.

ABR _ Activation Backup and Restore

if you use that, you can skip entering a CD-Key at installation (it allows you to do this). after vista has installed and your at the desktop, run the recover part of the program and it will re-activate and insert your key for you. hassle free. (make sure to store ABR apps+generated files on a removable drive)

i dont know much about drivers :p but i dont think XP will appreciate Vista drivers.

your licence key (inc. the OEM one) probably wont work with XP, and i dont think the downgrade agreement thing lets you have both. unless you have a new retail copy of xp or something.

    ---------------

    now my question:

ive managed to install vista and all drivers (for devices it can see anyway) on my FW21L, but i cant get the SD Card reader to appear and also the Control Center is missing many sections.

The sections i have are: System Information, Network Connections and Special Buttons (but its missing S Button and Document Zoom).

On the original install it has: System Info, Power Management, Keyboard+Mouse, Network, Display, Sounds, Security and Special Buttons (Doc Zoom, S Button, and Vaio Launcher)

am i missing these parts due to installing them in the wrong order? im going to try another re-install and try a different order, but i think im missing some files. (specifically the S-Button thing) i have extracted all the files from mod's in the recovery partition but there does not appear to be anything like the s-button app (not that i know what its called).

    any help would be appreciated.

thank you for your replie it's really apreciated!

I have a copy of windows xp pro with a valid key. I'm just wondering whats the easiest and the best? with that I mean the work load for getting drivers and how to do a clean install with xp64x and also if it will enhance my performance.

and also: do I still have a valid warranty on my vaio after I've done a clean install?
Does the recovery discs I've made take the computer back to original settings at any given time, or is there a chance that they won't work if something goes wrong while doing the install?

    thanks!

This article is superb. I have followed it exactly on my new VGN-FW21Z
Only I used the more recent drivers for the ATI card
The one SOAOTH-43700000-64.EXE caused a bit of a headache with the selfextractor, but I made it work too.
As a courtesy to all here, I have posted all the properly extracted drivers within their resp. directories (use WINRAR to recombine, no password). You can download from here (if you're not a Rapidshare member, you will have to wait some time before downloading, but you may still decide it's worth de time.

A very late update, just thought I'd mention that the OSD for Caps/Num/Scroll Lock have reappeared now after I've uninstalled the Bluetooth driver, rebooted the computer and then reinstalled the Bluetooth driver. This leaves only the FN7 (external display) OSD missing...

I did this the day I got my FW and it really unlocked it's potential. Took a little to set up the HDMI and audio, but it's been great since then. This really should be a sticky!

I just did a clean install of Vista x64 on my 140D and am having problems with the video drivers. I initailly installed modded Catalyst 9.2 drivers and found that there is a lot of horizonatal lines during motion (tearing?) when playing video on my secondary display. I then reverted back to catalyst 8.11 with no improvement.

I had no problems at all before the clean install. Does anyone have an idea of what went wrong?

Do you need to follow everything as written in install guide ? I've FW290 and it came with 64-bit Vista premium, I need to install 64-bit Vista Ultimate. Now Sony's website gives you individual drivers so wont it work by downloading those drivers individually and installing after Vista clean install is done ?

I have a FW139E. It had factory vista 32 bit, but seeing as I ordered a 3-4gb upgrade on the memory I knew I would want the 64 bit version installed. SO I did the clean install. While I found one driver I needed in the FW170J section for an unknown device I have yet to find something that will resolve my base system device issue, which seems to have affected nothing so far, the unknown driver was apparently the firmware parser extension. Also can't get my wireless card driver. I believe I have the Marvell Atheros wifi card. I have gone to Marvell's site and they don't have a driver for this device, and their generic install package didn't accomplish anything. I have tried the drivers from the sony supplied ones for my laptop and the one for the 170J and even extracted both and installed them, neither of them did anything. So wifi is kinda a big deal, I may use a smartcard or usb wifi temporarily, but I'd prefer the built in of course. Any suggestions would be helpful, also my webcam was installed with the vista 64 bit install but for some reason whenever I try to use it isn't sensed or connected or whatever. As such I'm kinda lost on that too so far, since there are no specific drivers from sony for the webcam, only management software. Suggestions would be very appreciated and helpful, thanks.

Guys, do you know if I can clean install Vista 32 on FW355?

Or, if I can clean install Windows 7 RC in FW355? I know there is thread on Windows 7 so I will also post this question in appropriate thread.

I am using an application that will not run on 64 bit.

    Thank you!

    Hi,

I tried out the steps of the clean install on my AW11M/H, but I could not find the Adobe Acrobat 8.0 in the list of the MOD-Files.

    I only found the

MODJ-118099: Adobe Premiere Elements 4.0 and
    MODJ-122196 Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0

including the Acrobat Reader, but not the full version of the Adobe Acrobat 8.0 which is included with the AW11.

In fact when I reinstalled the Notebook with the recovery DVDs, the Adobe Acrobat was installed as before - therefore it must be included on one of the DVDs. As I patched all the MOD-Files, maybe it is hidden in another file?

Did anybody found it for the clean install?

What else I saw on the Recovery HDD: there is a file called 0000032238.app with 643.082 kb - what does this file contain? And how can I extract it?

I found out the answer on myself. The 0000032238.app is not an *.mod-File as the others. You may extract all files with 7-Zip, getting the following structure:

    [1]
    [data]
    [2007]
    ....
    Containing the Synaptic Diver
    [2008]

    [01]
    ....
    Containing an Audio-Driver

    [02]
    ....
    Containing Adobe Acrobat 8 Standard

    [03]
    ....
    Containing Intel(R) Chipset Device Software

    [04]
    ....
    Containing ISB Utility (whatever??)

    [05]
    ....
    Containing Vaio Wallpaper Contents

    [06]
    ....
    Containing Java Runtime 6

Installing Adobe Acrobat will insert your SN automatically, therefore it is not necessary to ask Sony to send you this information.

In fact that was the missing peace for me to have a real clean install with all programs of the preinstalled system I need.

    ----------------

I have a couple of (stupid) questions I need answers to but I just had to make sure before continuing.

    First off...

1.) Vaio Restore DVD(s). This is very important, if anything goes wrong you want to be able to restore you FW to its original state.

This is the 3 Recovery DVDs that came with the Sony Vaio right?

    anddddd...

1.) If you haven't already, create your restore DVD(s) using VAIO recovery center.

Is this the 3 recovery DVDs or is this something completely different that I have to do?

Does anyone know where I could obtain Windows Vista (Home Premium) SP1 OEM standalone installation media?

I bought my FW21E from Switzerland, so the installation language originally was GE/FR/IT/EN (I however later changed it to Finnish with Vistalizator). As far as I know product keys are (of course) version, language and OEM/RETAIL/UPDATE sensitive.

So I would need Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 OEM EN/GE/FR/IT installation disc? Or could I build it myself with vlite? Is it enough to use disc with only one language from the product key?

Has anyone used their keys to same version but retail and different language and SP?

At the moment I have these standalone installation discs:
Vista (all versions, all languages anytime upgrade) RTM DVD,
Vista Home Premium RTM OEM EN

should I slipstream SP1 to one of these and install with them or get correct media elsewhere. Yes I know this is definitely confusing but it's all about MS's licensing...

What is the meaning of clean installation?
is it mean, if u have an original vista dvd, u insert that & start to install windows on your laptop by that?

My FW490CTO is expected to arrive today. I was going to install Windows 7 RC but after reading the threads at this forum, I am under the impression that WinDVD will not work afterwards and I will not be able to play Blu-Ray movies as a result.

Can anyone confirm whether or not this is true? Furthermore, is it a problem with the Blu-Ray drive or just WinDVD? Can I install something like PowerDVD 7 (with Blu-ray playback) and expect to watch Blu-Ray movies on my FW490CTO under Windows 7 RC?

Go to the Sony support website - select your computer model, download the Optiarc bd driver update. Install the file and you should be ok.

I had a similar problem when I installed Itunes - something wiped out my bd drivers and I got the yellow question mark in device manager.

I just received my new Sony FW. I'd like to do a clean install of Vista and I have two questions.

    1) May I use an install DVD that has SP2? Or will that conflict with the installation as recommended by this guide.

    2) I'm eligible and will receive Windows 7 for free from Sony (I hope). Do you think a clean install of vista might cause a problem for the win7 upgrade dvd?

Hello guys, I am not sure if anybody can answer this question!
I have a FW490 VAIO that came with Vista Home premium and recently I downloaded SP2 for Vista and my system crashed three times and every time I used the SONY VAIO recovery disk to bring it back to factory status.

Now I am thinking, if a virus caused all these crashes, it's better to reformat the HD then install the OS but I am not sure if this VAIO HD is reformatable at all?!! Can I reformat the HDD C before using Sony recovery disk to install Win Vista and then upgrade to Win 7. Because I have an upgrade disk of Win 7 sent to me. But I realy want to have a reformatted HD before I do anything else.
