SHAWNEE, Kan. -- Firefighters were called to a home in the 8900 block of Rene Wednesday morning after a laptop computer burst into flames.

Well that model is like 6~ years old. I would believe that the original battery probably finished its charging cycle by now thus it may probably be 3rd party battery because they do sell them. Its all down to the circuits on the battery to keep it safe. They do, do battery replacements where they take apart original to put in 3rd party ones. So this really has to be investigated before we can say that our SZs will explode.

don't forget that the dell battery recall was on sony batteries. it would only make sense that some sony laptops would be affected...

Just another isolated case, and people are blowing it way out of proportion. I still feel safe using my laptop on my lap.

Why do people call family members before calling 911?

that guy said he still feels comfortable using his laptop on his lap. i'm pretty sure you would notice it getting hot and do something about it before it burst into flames while touching you anyway...

Hardly, sony is picking up the tab for dell (and possibly apple) though the damage done to dells rep is probally worth it to sony.

Apparently Sony laptops use Panasonic/Matsushita cells in them. Anyway, as someone said it could well be the power management circuitry and not the cells themselves.

It is kind of weird that Sony laptops contain other brands of batteries but then again, there was a time when IBM used Toshiba hard disks in their computers too.

I have an SZ series and have other problems though, including lock-ups/freezes (mouse cursor continues to move but nothing else works at all) and the palm rest sometimes has a small electric current across it. I won't get rid of it now because I need to use it but Sony really are messing up things for a lot of people...
