I've been given a sony Vaio to repair
At first i thought it would be a simple restoration problem
but to my shock this laptop has been pretty ill treated:

    Screws missing
    no hard-drive
    and pretty battered

but none the less i had a go
put in a fresh hard drive and tried booting it up

but no display? you can see it kinda turns on cause it goes from the green color
    to a dark purple.

I had a search about online and seen that some people have had problems like this with other vaio models and in america there was a recall on several of them with problems on the motherboard

but obviously this laptop is rather aged now and past its warranty

    Any Ideas?

    Help me guys

Its a sony vaio MODEL:- PCG-7A1M

    thanks
    Jamie

You could try to buy another notebook of the same model. Use one to replace missing or broken parts on the other.

Does the display actually display any correct information on it (you can tell if you get real real close and peer into it, especially during boot up). If so it's probably the backlight or the power converter for the display.

If the screen doesn't display any info at all, maybe the graphics chip is missing (hey, the HDD was gone right)... just kidding. It could be that the graphics chip, BIOS or memory is damaged.

Another possibility (if none of the above are damaged) is that the display itself or the display connector is damaged.

The unfortunate part of these kinds of repairs is that to keep costs down you tend to start from the least costly problems, but it can turn out that you fix the only thing that was necessary after you've put down more money than necessary...

In all honesty I'd say just get a used (but working) machine to replace it, or a real cheap new one...
