I'm having to return my TZ130 to Sony to repair a bad screen. This is a bit of a hassle for me, since I take it to and from work every day and it is my production machine. Back in November, I wiped the drive and installed Ubuntu Gutsy and (with a little help from an XP VM and VMWare) have been living the mostly good Linux life.

Since the drive was fine, and the external VGA output was unaffected, I was able to back up my date about 20 different ways. I pulled my old Sony TR1 from the shelf where it had been gathering dust, installed it with Ubuntu, and restored my data to it. I also cleaned all the fingerprints and gunk off it that it had collected over the years. It still is missing a piece of the casing where my wife managed to bang it into something.

Right now, I'm up and running, with all my data, and the performance on this old system is almost as good as my TZ130 (and with 1Gb less RAM). Since the hard drive is so small, I couldn't load my XP VM, and having only a single USB connection means that I'll have to dig out my old USB hub if I want to connect more than my cordless keyboard. If I needed wireless at home I would have to step my router down to G&B. Still, it is very cool that this little system is still useful after four or five years.

Check out the SiliconPopCulture forums here.

Its a dedicated Vaio TR community that started when it first came out in late 2003. Its not very active anymore but still a good place to check out. Great to see the TR is still in use, it was the first ultraportable notebook I saw, blown away when I saw it at my local Fry's Electronics. :)
