    Hi guys,
The repair man just left after an on-site repair of my SZ-120. He replaced the LCD because I dropped my computer and the backlight went out. He also replaced the keyboard too.

When he swapped out the old LCD it showed that it was made by SHARP. The new LCD he put in was made by Toshiba. The new screen is bright as ever but there is a serious uneven lighting problem. The bottom of the LCD seems freakishly over bright. I saw this problem on the forums with some first generation SZ notebooks. Most people got the whole laptop replaced. My question is do any of you have experience on what actually causes this uneven backlighting? Is it the case not being on snuggly? Is it the inverter that does the whole lighting thing? Or is it the LCD?

The repairman said the LCD should not effect backlighting, and the casing seems snug. Let me know if you guys know what should be replaced. The repairman will be back next week to replaced the inverter. Hopefully that helps. I am just wondering if my old screen has this much leakage. I know there was some when you view a all black screen in a pitch dark room. But the new leakage seems visable during a bright day and from any other angle except directly in front.

Am I the only one who finds it bizarre that Sony is using third-party LCDs? I thought the whole fuss over X-Brite was that they used their own panels?

From that pic it doesn't look too bad. Only something you can see on a black screen.

I am surprised that they use other manufacturer's lcds. Although Sharp makes an excellent lcd.

speaking of the onsite (and I assume you have the accidental coverage with it since they are replacing it because you dropped it)...what all does it cover?

What if you happened to scratch the lid of the screen? (the one that says vaio). Is that covered? Or what if you spilled your coffee on it or stepped on it. Is that considered an accident that is covered? I figure for $200,it would be worth it to get something like that.

The sony style rep on the phone said yes to all of those questions, the spilled coffee, the case scratches, etc. I was going to get the magnesium hand rest replaced too because of a dent, and sony rep was willing to order one for me but I opted out of it after learning they couldn't put the stickers on the new plate. I like my three stickers. Reminds me why this laptop is worth so much.

Anywho, someone else on the forum complained that they couldn't get their case replaced. Duh know if that is just bad luck with the rep on the phone.
One thing to note is that they deduct the repair off the sticker price of the laptop. Think I"m down $500 now, so about $1500 more credit. The way I see it, I pretty much got my money's worth for replacing the LCD. The insurance was only $400 anyways.

Posts like these really amuse/perplex me.
Doesn't the performance, light weight, features and entire package remind you of why it cost so much? Surely you don't rely on stickers(!)...

For me...every time this little laptop churns through processor and graphics-intensive applications like butter--I know why I paid my pennies.

My stickers came off within the first 30 minutes out of the box...

I don't really have any graphically intense programs on this laptop yet so I didn't really get a chance to feel the power of its number crunching. I did play Call to Duty 2 on this computer. It was amazingly fast until my hard drive started getting full. More free hard drive space sped things up tremendously.

Anywho, anyone know if the inverter is the cause of the light leakage? Or is everyone pretty much having the same amount of leaking? Guess I've just been staring at the old broken LCD for too long.

What does that mean? Do you mean they value the SZ in parts and if you go over the total value of the parts it's no longer covered? When I purchased my SZ160 I also purchased the 2 year accidental warranty but I really haven't read the fine print. I wonder if Dells Completecare warranty works the same way.

Hahaha, you didn't want to change out the dented palmrest because you didn't want to loose the stickers? Wow that is unique obsession. :) Good for you.

As far as I can tell from the pic your backlight looks OK. Sure it could be better, but I've seen much worse.

really? /_\ My old screen was near perfect.
At least the keyboard is wonderful now. It could just be the more sensitive space bar, but I can type as fast as I used to now. The keys seem more softer and more responsive.

I love my stickers. When I'm at the library studying with other laptop welding friends, we may all be craming the same set of powerpoint notes, but my stickers are there to act as a constant reminder of the power under the hood. ^_^
