I got a Sony VAIO VGN-SZ330P for free. It is about three years old and the manufacture date is late 2006. The problem is that on startup I get the above message. I took the drive out of the computer and hooked it up externally to my pc and was able to read and write to it. Because of this I would have to think the HD is OK. When I put it back in the laptop it does not spin and the bios does not see it. I am thinking a controller or mobo or a disconnected power cable inside. It is a SATA drive with a single combined power/data connector. I have not taken it fully apart and was hoping not to, but I will if I have to. Any other thoughts or ideas as to the cause.

If it is not spinning and the bios does not see it, then the drive is not getting any power, or it is not connecting properly. This may be the reason you were given it for free ;)

Only way to be sure is to open it up, you have no warranties to void and nothing to lose!

    Here is a guide!
