I've got a friend offering me a Vaio GRT with the following specs:

I'm planning to use this as a desktop replacement. How will this system perform while running games like far cry? Also, any upgrades reccomended?

The video RAM is a little light for the high end games. THey will still play, just at reduced graphics settings. There are a bunch of GRT owners on these boards, I'm sure they can relay specific experience.

Hi Vic,
As a desktop replacement this notebook has pretty good specs. It's only real weak point is it's video controller, the FX Go 5600 is a couple of generations old and will work well for games that were published 2 years ago. For todays games you will need to do like Brian said and reduce the graphics settings to get them to run.
I would find out why your friend wants to get rid of his system? Could it be that he is a gamer and the system can't perform well on todays games? You could always ask to try it out before you buy it and install far cry on it to see how well it does work.

One more thing,
I did find something I don't like.
This notebook uses the SiS chipset, in the past I've had nothing but bad experience with the SiS chipset. They always seemed to have compatibility issues that the Intel or Via chipsets never had so I always steer clear of anything with an SiS chipset, but perhaps things have gotten better with them in the last year or so, so it might be worth investigating.

Yeah, I'm kind of worried about the video card not being able to handle the latest games. But after reading Slat's review here,

I noticed that his notebook, with almost similar specs, sill managed to score 3000+ 3dMark scores. What do you guys think?
Regarding the point about my friend getting rid of his system, he's leaving the country soon, so that's not a problem. -
I still maintain that it's fine so long as you don't expect to play new high-end games at full video settings.
