    Hi there,

I've had this problem with my optical drive for the last two days and after trying to fix it myself, i finally decided to give in and ask for help.

I own a vaio VGN FS115E, still running xp home and i've run into a problem with the optical drive. So far it still reads fine, not sure about writing yet, but when i try and play audio cd's or dvd's the video and audio lags constantly from the beginning. I use VLC, windvd and media player 11 and the freeware k-lite mega codec pack.

    So far i've:

-cleaned the drive with a lens cleaner,
    -checked that dma is enabled,
-system restored to a point last week when the problem didn't exist,
-downloaded the correct driver update from the sony website to find that it presents "drive doesn't exist" and cancels the install
-re-installed the codec pack orginally thinking it may be a codec problem
    -re-installed wmp 11

All videos and audio files on my hardrive play perfectly, reading dvd's and audio cd's present extreme lagging and reading archived files and copying files from cd-r's and dvd-r's is now slower than usual. Will have owned the laptop for 2 years from march next year i'm hoping its not on the way out, shouldn't be i've hardly used the optical drive.

If anyone can shed some light on this i'd very much appreciate it :)

    -Simon

Make sure that your video and audio drivers are updated. Also realize that audio from the optical drive plays through a different path than off the hard drive, so that is often part of it. Did anything change between last week and this week? Is your chipset using a compatability mode of some sort, have you checked that all of your devices have a proper driver and not a yellow warning sign next to them in the device manager?
