    Try ATItool.

Yes overclocking will make it hotter. So make sure your temps are low before you overclock.

Wouldn't this question best be asked elsewhere? Like in a board which is targeted at overclocking? Or the Gaming forum of this board?

There on the first page you can find a guide dedicated to a similar matter: overclocking the HD3650

    Hi guys,
I'm quite new here and I have similar problem.. Before christmas I was thinking about desktop computer with high-end graphics like 5870 or 5970 but finally I bought a laptop --> SONY VAIO FW51MF with underclocked (450/600) ATI Mobility Radeon 4650

And here appears my question... How to overclock this card? At least to stock clocks (550/800).... I'd be grateful if someone experienced in this issue explains it for me step by step (I mean what applications, what to do first, what then.., what tests should I do, etc). I've neved overclocked anything so u understand my doubts.. I don't want to spoil anything cause my laptop is fresh..

Although I can smoothly play DEAD SPACE using native resolution 1900x1080 (everything high, no AA) and it looks great, I want to try Crysis for example

    Regards,
    Luc

Oh and I wanna add my temps

    AT REST:
    Hardware monitor ACPI
    Temperature 0 41°C (105°F) [0xC46] (TZ00)
    Temperature 1 41°C (105°F) [0xC46] (TZ01)

Hardware monitor Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo P8700
    Temperature 0 37°C (98°F) [0x3F] (Core #0)
    Temperature 1 37°C (98°F) [0x3F] (Core #1)

    Hardware monitor ST950032 5AS
    Temperature 0 37°C (98°F) [0x25] (Assembly)
    Temperature 2 37°C (98°F) [0x25] (Air Flow)

Hardware monitor ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650
    Temperature 0 50°C (122°F) (GPU Core)

During playing DEAD SPACE (highest graphic settings, no AA) 60°C (140°F)

Ok I'm glad there is someone besides me who wanted to do it ;) so u have experience, can u tell me:
    1. Have gaming performance become better after OC ? (which games, how many fps, etc?)
    2. What temps do u have during playing after OC ?
    3. Have u got any blue or black screens so far ?

    4. Have u done any tests (for ex. 3dmark) before/after OC ?

Have you tried Game Booster. It is free and when activated it will let you shut down programs that are not needed while you are playing a game. When done you click on it and it will restart the shutdown programs.

I tried oc the card using GPUTool as kaniyan suggested. This tool works just fine. The highest clocks I tried were 600/800 - about 30% boost and the temperature was about 5 °C higher than normal. What surprised me was, that the core clock did not improved fps at all (measured just in the GPUTool) while the memory did all the work.

dude overclocking the core also has a boost which you can see when comparing 3dmark06 scores.but the memory is not very much stable at 800mhz.yesterday my comp crashed when i was playing dirt 2 for over 2 hours.i downclocked the memory a little bit and it runs fine now

I see you are right. I made a few 3DMark06 tests and here are my results:
    @ 450-600: 5540
    @ 500-675: 6131
    @ 600-600: 6120
    @ 550-740: 6626
    @ 600-800: 7058
Resolution for all benchmarks were 1280x720

Is there any difference between the normal HD4650 and HD4650 in Sony laptops (except the clocks)? If not it should be stable at 550-800 which I think is not...

That depends on the game you are playing. You have to try it yourself.

I tried a lot of combinations while playing Mass effect but I always get a black screen after some time (the screen goes black, fan goes to 100% and only thing you can do is to shut it down by holding the power button). Sometimes after an hour sometimes 30min. I read on the internet and someone said that it could be vpu recover, can anyone confirm that?

It is strange since the temperatures are ok, I got 71°C at peaks which is not a critical temperature. Mostly its about 65-68°C. I remember my old asus... 96°C under load with no oc.

the card at it's default setting isn't someting special but when overclocked it really runs games great. Some games don't like it (especially bugy ones ), like Fallout3 (600/800) , but games like Dirt2, Metro2033 are good at 740/850 . With that clocks Metro2033 is playable , ~30fps with setting 1280x800 , DX10, High details , which really impressed me , since it's one of the most demanding games today. You can play it even on 1600x900 but then framerate sometimes drops to 15fps. On 3dmark06 side(1280x800) , i managed ~8200 @760/860 which is not much stable , but i can run it all day long @730/850 and get 7850 . One thing i noticed. Notebook is much more stable with cpu undervolted .

For maxium stabilty test i would recommend running GPU tool stabilty test together with some CPU stress tool . You'll be amazed with temps :D
