I ordered a Sony Vaio E series laptop yesterday which has a ati 5650 underclocked to 450mhz. Now I've heard that its possible to overclock it using AMDs gpu clock tool back to the 650mhz it should be. Does this mean that the clock rate of the gpu will always be set at that value or will it reset to 450mhz on restart?

Is there any way to make sure that the gpu stays overclocked always even on restart of windows?

Unless you want it to eat your battery alive, leave it clocked low, then before playing a game overclock it. Personally, unless I'm playing a game, my G210m stays clocked at 135mhz, then when gaming I set it to 625mhz. @135mhz, the notebook gets better battery life plus it stays around 38c(!) at idle.

it shouldnt matter about battery as it should automatically downclock when you run on battery

It doesn't - setting clocks manually overrides ATI's powerplay

Exactly. ATI is different than NVIDIA. Powermizer will still underclock in 2D when overclocked, but ATI powerplay won't if you overclock. You have to manually bring it back down.
