I'm getting a "ready-to-ship" one, so I'm just getting the defaults that come with it and stuff. Nothing customized.

I'm pretty much liking everything it has to offer!
But I have a few questions that I can't find online, or that just weren't that descriptive...

    1. You Vaio F owners, would you say that this laptop is able of being used on your lap when doing general web browsing? Or does it heat up to the point that your body feels like sweating a bit? lol

    2. Would you say that this laptop is somewhat portable? I know it's already a 16 inch, so that takes some points off on portability, but you know... Can I maybe move it from my house to the library 5 times a week? Hahaha. That's the most action it would see. When I get to the library, it'd be on a desk for a few hours. I'd get a bag for it too, making it easier for me to take it around. You know what.. I think I just answered my own question. Anyway, I want your input on this.

    3. That leads to my next question! Since I will be at the library 5 times a week during morning time, is the fan going to stand out in there? I mean, it's super quiet there! I don't want to be the attention grabber, haah.

    4. Can this laptop run Photoshop?

    5. Is the hardware that gets hot put where your palms would be at? I hate that on my laptop. Why can't they just put it at the front, you know?! Is the Vaio F like this?

Reason I'm so stressed out about heat and fans is because.... wait for it.... wait for it.... I'm coming from an Xps M1730. Oh gosh, guys. This thing literally heats up like an oven. I even start sweating from the heat and my room gets hot after a while. Also, it made a huge brown spot on my thigh. I always knew it was hot, but I used to say "I'll just deal with it". Didn't think it could actually "cook" my skin... So now anything related to laptops gives me nightmares, considering that I haven't had any experiences with any other laptops. It's stuck in my head that every laptop out there will BURN me and make me all stinky and sweaty! Xps M1730phobia, lol.
... Also.. I have a low heat tolerance. Hate the heat!

    Please, Vaio owners! Answer!!

You need to clarify which Vaio F you are talking about. There is the F1 series and the F2 series. The F2 is further divided into the 2D version and the 3D version. There are owner lounges for all three of these.

I can only speak for for the F1. I use my laptop on my lap 100% of the time without it getting too hot or burning me. The palm rests also do not burn - they can get warm but I never get uncomfortable.

The fan can be loud but not as loud as my Dell. There is on the F13 version a Silent Mode, which is not Silent actually, but can lower the fan noise under certain conditions. But you will hear the fan in a quiet environment.

    Yes, it can run Photoshop.

Portability is your own opinion. It is portable but not something I'd want to carry around everywhere with me. Then again, I am a small person, walk everywhere for transportation, and already carry a lot with me everyday. If it was all I was carrying it wouldn't bother me.

    Used to own an F12.

    1. I could use it on my lap for about 20 to 30 minutes at light load before it starts becoming uncomfortable. At heavy load it will roast your nuts.

    2. You will get just over an hour on the battery and the notebook weighs about 3.2 kilos. Carrying it around is no trouble until you find yourself holding it for any significant length of time. Having to carry it under one arm for like half an hour will make your arm feel like its going to drop off. Because of the short battery life you need to carry around the power brick too so add another 0.5 kilos or thereabouts. It is not portable. I ended up selling the F12 and buying a second hand VAIO SR which is about 2 kilos and feels much lighter. You can carry it around for much longer periods of time and the battery life is decent enough that you can realistically use it away from a wall socket. Therefore you don't need to carry the power brick around too. Once you get used to not having to carry a power brick around, it really is a huge benefit. One of those things you never think about until you get a notebook thats designed to be small and light with good battery life. It is of course nowhere near as fast as an F12 but I could live with that.

16.4" diagonal makes it substantially bigger than A4 size. So if your backpack or brief case can just about hold an A4 sized ring binder, the F series will be way too big.

    3. Hard to tell. I live out in the country so no traffic noise outside and when its quiet, its pin drop quiet. The fan noise was always a bone of contention for me, not because its especially loud when idle or under light load, but because its constantly speeding up and slowing down. If the fan rpm was constant you could zone out but because its so restless it constantly demands your attention. I didn't notice it in my office but the background noise of my office is surprisingly high. Most people don't realise how noisy their work environment is because the noise is constant and very random so its easy to tune out. Kind of like when you are stuck in traffic.

    4. Easily. I was using the F12 for music production and it handled that no sweat.

    5. It definitely gets warm on the palm rest but F series has many palm rests. I had the faux leather one. The F1 series also had a plastic palm rest that I can't comment on. The F2 series has a completely different design that I can't comment on. Either way, it never got hot enough even at max load to become uncomfortable but it was noticeably warmer.

I recommend notebookcheck.net's review of the F11 if you are considering an F1 series. As a former owner of an F12 I have to say that pretty much everything they say is correct in regards to the EU model, the good and the bad. The US F1 series does not have the nice matte 1080p display. The EU 1080p matte display is very nice though.
