I've recently come into a VFK machine, and found a possible memory upgrade but listed as VPK - are these machines the same but differed for sales purposes or essentially non-compatible machines? Is there an online resource where someone can establish these sorts of details?

The VFK is the Euro version of the VPK, so the memory will work fine. In fact, the memory in Picturebooks is the same from the C1X to C1V models; the C1M series uses DDR ram.
