My wife volunteered me to look at her friends very old laptop and it's clear the HDD has failed. First number is the laptop & dock combined (which is how Sony list it) and the second number is laptop itself.

The drive is embedded in the machine and it seems I need to remove the one-piece bottom casing to get at it. I removed all the screws but the casing still seems unmoveable, and of course I don't want to break it.

I've Googled for hours but can't find service type instructions - Sony has the user manual Sony : Support for PCG-R600HMPD | PCG-R600HMPD technical support but it doesn't go into detail. Can anyone guide me, please?

To answer my own question - had another look today and after undoing all the screws in the base, flipped the unit over and found the palm rest lifts off, and there's the HDD!

Just have to work around the lack of recovery disks now!
