I noticed lately, whenever I turn on my laptop after its been off for many hours (like overnight), it will boot to the desktop screen, show my icons, show the sony power mgmt icon, and though it will show the mouse cursor being busy...the system will freeze (though the mouse still moves) and I then have to power down with the power button (ctrl, alt doesnt even work). I power it up right after and its fine. But its happened like 4 straight nights so far. Is there any tests I can run or maybe need to reset the cmos battery or memory of the batter or something?

Sorry, I can't help you. If it's from hibernation, it could be from currupted data.
Which vaio is this? There have been some fresh boot issue on past vaio laptops (Older S series, as well as my old V505).
My old V505 used to have this fresh boot problem where after turning on and the Vaio logo appeared, nothing happened. I suspect it's the memory module problem, and it's never correctly fixed. Eventually it's replaced with a new S560 from the extended warranty.

    Can somebody please help?

I tried re-inserting my HD and ram, and even tried moving the ram to the other slot. didnt work.

If I take this to Sony i dont think they would look at it even though its covered by warranty for the fact that I upgraded the ram and HD with my own parts. Do you think theres any chance this is a s/w OS issue? If so, maybe try reformatting?

I'm not sure about Sony, but Dell's warranties are still valid if you replace the HDD and/or RAM. They just won't cover the replaced parts.

Have you run antivirus/spyware programs recently?

yes matt. Though i might do the A/V again right now.

I didnt call Sony because its Sunday but I called another place that is very good for support and the dude said that if Im getting freezes only on the first initial boot and the OS boots fine everytime on the 2nd try right after - then its most likely a S/W bug. So he said to try reformatting first...before I go out and spend money on another HD or RAM. He also added that if it was the RAM that gone bad, it would freeze everytime, or just about.
