    Hello.

I recently bought a Vaio K45 and I want to make a NEW partition on my hard drive.

I do not have "Partition Magic" or any other similar programs. I do not want to pay for any applications unless I absolutely have to.

I have formatted, partitioned, and installed Operating Systems on my desktop systems in the past so I'd like to do something similar- but the Vaio's setup has me a bit flummoxed!

    Would this idea work:

Reformat C:, Partition C:, use the restore CDs I made to reinstall Windows XP - would I end up with a 'factory fresh' system with a new partition? Would it even work?

As you can tell, I am not really sure how the restore CDs work!

If anyone has alternative ideas or suggestions please fire 'em at me.

    Thanks in advance!

    Flummoxed...great word!

I believe your idea is worth a try. Make sure you create copies of your restore CDs before doing anything else. I know the VAIO restore program gives you the option of reclaiming the space on your HD reserved for the system restore. I don't recommend this as you are now 100% dependent on your restore disks with no fallback but it is an option.

Worst case the Sony system restore forces you to use your entire drive. In that case you can revert to something like Partition Magic or if you have a copy of XP from an old system you are no longer using you can install it, partition the drive and download the drivers from Sony (download the drivers first if you go this route).

Good luck and let us know how it goes.
