It's cosmetic. But it bothers me that I spent over $2500 PC that can't handle its own heat. As you can see, left speaker cover (from F1 to F5 key) is slightly bent due to the heat. This happened within a week of purchase.

If this happened to me, I'd call up Sony support asap and have them send me a new one. Are you sure this is caused by heat?
-
I agree. If that happened within a week I would be asking for a replacement. That should be covered under manuf or extended warranty. The store you bought it at may even take it back from you since its within 30 days.

I've seen this happen with many, many sony laptops. Even the ones on display at my job are slightly bent like that. I blame the poor framing tbh =(
Get sony to do something about it! -
I checked mine, my speaker grilles seem fine, but i notice the keyboard is not perfectly flat, it looks similar to yours in the pic. I wonder if it is just the angle of the photo taken.
I noticed you have the best SZ491, would the premium carbon casing makes a difference -
Wow I would be more then upset. My 320 doesn't seem to have any over heating issues.
-
It was spanking new when I bought it (from ebay though). But i doubt there is a fake 491. I tried to push the bulged plastic cover but it won't go in. It's permanently warped. I wonder if the heat damage is due to the fact that mine is as you can see, SZ491. I don't know if the higher processing power have contributed to higher heat than other lower model SZs. Also as you can see, the pc is a dust magnet. I know that the three prong power supplies can elimate dust collecting problems. Is there any Sony brand three prong power supply available?
-
How are you sure that this is caused by heat? Mine also has a bulge in the same area but it there to begin with. I believe the bluetooth module is installed in that area. Did the bulge develop over time or are u just assuming that it is due to heat? I'm gonna bet that it was there from the start and has nothing to do with heat.
-
Actually that's where the cooling fan and the heat pipe from the CPU are located at. The plastic was flat when I first bought it. I'm very meticulous when it comes to finding out any cosmetic flaw. But one day I noticed loud fan noise churning constantly and the bottom of the Sz was really hot to a point I couldn't touch the surface of the bottom panel for more than 2 seconds. It was that hot. I don't think any typical plastic could endure such heat.

Well can't say I've ever had mine under so much heat that it was too hot to touch or anything. Hope it never happens to me either, but I guess you had to be careful, like you said there is a fan underneath there and stuff - sure you left enough ventilation there for it to cool?
-
from eBay............... although it is not likely you will get a fake Sz491, you sure the CPU or the hardwares you have inside are legit SONY? I think SONY engineerers would not let any laptop to be produced if something like this is going to happen. just my 2 cents

Thats unlikely a result of heat. I hammered my SZ2 quite a bit and have never seen that. Besides, that area is hardly the hottest spot when it gets hot. So if it would bend, it would not bend there. The temp there is simply not hot enough, at least not on my SZ2. I'd say that is a result of rough handling.

Who was the eBay seller you bought this from? Have you contacted Sony about this? You still have the standard 1 year warranty regardless of where it was bought.
-
My SZ381Pp has the same grill problem, though no as severe. I've had mine for 6 months or so. I can definitely feel the bump when i run my fingers across the grill. The laptop gets quite hot - not sure whether it's a laptop specific issue or general build of the SZ.
Not sure if Sony will do anything about it. -
I have played games for many, many hours on my SZ which I have had for about 14months. The bottom of the laptop gets extremely hot to the point where I could not touch it for long either. Make sure you are allowing the vents on the bottom to get air whenever you are running at full load. I use an aluminum cooling pad at all times.

For those who are not sure about the SZ's internal mechanism, here is the photo.
As you can see, not only the fan but the heat pipe is located between F1 to F5 keys.
As soon as I bought my 491, it was placed on the docking station on the wide open desk. Air circulation was more than adaquate. But I had my SZ set on the speed mode. So certainly the SZ was pumping more jouls. As you've seen, there are quite a few people who have similar bulged speaker cover. I know for certain that it was flat. Speaking about the fake SZ, although there are quite a good fake items out there, I don't know if it would be economical to assemble extremely hard to get electronic parts off the shelf, such as the LED LCD and the premium carbon fiber casing. To me, the packaging was quite authentic and even Sony customer service got my serial number as legit. Only thing I could assume is that it's the top of the line SZ and maybe Sony engineers pushed its envelop a little too high. Also I had my SZ idle for several hours unattended. That's when I noticed it was pumping a lot of air through the vent.Last edited by a moderator: Feb 6, 2015 -
what's the name of the ebay seller? is it colpic?
-
Why do you ask about colpic? I am waiting for a sz 450 from him....

It's not colpic. But she was reputable seller.
