Hello, I've been on these boards for about a week now trying to decide whether to buy an IBM X60 or a Sony SZ series. I think that the SZ would be a better fit, but I'm worried about the reports of voltage coming through the palm rest.

Has Sony fixed this on its newer SZ models? If not, is there a confirmed fix that solves the problem?

Thanks in advance for any responses!

The fix is a 3 pronged AC adapter Sony has started shipping to affected customers. I'm not sure if it's available on the newer models, but if you do get the 2 pronged one you can contact Sony and get the 3 pronged one for free. Hope this helps.

Simply call customer service and explain your situation and they have to replace it for you. I just got mine last week.

You feel it if you put your palms flat and press down. You will find it if you try hard to feel it. Through normal use i don't really notice it. If you call Sony they will send you an extra AC adaptor with 3 prongs.

    sounds good.

but will they send you one in the mail upon request or do they require you to give them your old adaptor in exchange for the new one?

they shipped my new adapter overnight, got it the day after i called them. no word about returning the old one(this seems to be the case in the US, while users in other countries may have received a return package for the old adapter).

another thing to note is that it's not just the adapter that causes the shock problem, but any connected device that requires AC power and is not grounded. eg: external hard disks, video cameras, etc.

on the other hand, once ur laptop is connected to any device that is grounded, the shock problem goes away, eg: ext monitor, etc.
