Hi I purchased a Vaio FS-500 Notebook Last week.
I had custom ordered it from sony.com.

    Specs are
    1.86 Pentium-M
30G HD (I replaced it with Hitachi 7200rpm HD 60G)
    nVIdia 6200 Go Card
    512mb ram (I replaced it with 1 X 512mb & 1 X 1G so total memory is 1.5gb)
    Wireless a/b/g card

Anyway, I am very sensitive about the fan noise. That is the main reason why I bought a centrino notebook even though I didn¡¯t need that much mobility.

In the last 10 months, I have used the following notebooks
    HP ZT3000 with 1.5 Pentium-M
    Compaq X1000 with 2.0 Pentium-M
    Toshiba M30SE with 1.7 Pentium-M

These notebooks didn¡¯t have their fans running the whole time. I understand that when the fan turns on it will be a loud noise but it also turns off after a couple seconds. (I could handle that kind of noise.)

My FS-500¡¯s fan turns on right after the computer boots up. It doesn¡¯t make a loud noise but the noise never turns off. ( there is a small consistent noise that drives me crazy)

I read a few reviews about the FS-500 and that the fan isn¡¯t loud (I agree that the fan isn¡¯t loud) It also stated that the fan isn¡¯t on as often. Is that true? My FS-500 fan is always on is something wrong?

Short battery life, lack of some ports, and no DDR II is not a problem for me. I just want the fan to turn off.

I checked for all spyware and viruses. I am certain that isn¡¯t the problem for the fan being on at all times.

Does your fan on your FS 500 stay on at all times?

It sounds like the fan is moving at a slow pace.

I would appreciate any kind of feedback.

    Thank you again.

Well I've only had mine for a day, but it hasn't come on much at all.

For me it only comes on in short bursts (~5s) after an hour or so of intensive work.
    How hot is your CPU?

I guess I would assume that the 7200RPM HD is generating more heat causing the fan to run more than on the standard configurations. Just a guess.

I've got the same problem, ordered the vaio 3 days ago and I can't take it no more...its going back. Shame really cause I love everything else about the machine, it looks fantastic, the screen is sooo good. I know I'm a bit sensitive on the noise bit but it just doesn't cease. It wouldn't be so bad if the fan stayed at the same pitch but it kind've whines up and down in pitch...I'd love someone to say I've got a dodgy model cause I buy another one straight off!..Its probably the only sony purchase i've been dissapointed with...T33 digital camera is fantastic!...not sure what to buy now, i'm tempted by the 'pipe cooled' Dell Latitude 610 which was reviewed as being incredibly silent but its doesn't look half as good as the Sony...bugger.

yeah, i did come across the same article but i'd already batched it up and it was sitting there ready to be sent back :(. It got to the point that i simply couldn't work on the thing and it kind of ruined the whole 'experience'...real shame cause everything else was spot on. If sony ever resolve this thing or perhaps make the sensible response in allowing fan/heat settings to be configured, i'd definately go for a vaio, until then they ain't for me.

    Thanks again for the link.

My P4 runs cooler than that [ :p].
One thing for sure is that the 7200RPM doesn't generate more heat. I had a 4200RPM before I swapped in the 7200RPM and I saw no difference.
Check task manager for stuff eating up CPU and kill them. Your CPU should idle between 0-2% usage when you are doing nothing.
+ what's the ambient temp in the room where you are.

    CPU Temp is 50-54c
    HDD Temp is 45c

I undervolting it Maximum from 1.308v to 1.068v.

But even after undervolting, not much different. Fan is still working full time.

    Thank you for the tips.

    Thank you for the advice..

Anyway, I am 100% sure that I have no spyware or virus in my system. CPU usage is only 2-5% when it is idle.

My room temp is around 70F.

When my computer working at 800Mhz, CPU Temp is around 45c but fan is still on.(but not fast but slowly)

I think FS500's fan set as turn on around 40c.

I hope I can change fan setting. Is any way I can change fan setting??

    Thanks again.

    try this: http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php
there are some other software around to control fan's speed, but you need to have your laptop supported

it never worked for me either. some manufacturers just use hardware temp control that cannot be tapped into thru software, or at least without a bios fix/release.
