    Hi all

My son knocked my laptop (sony vaio vgn-ns10l os vista home edition 256 hd) off chair in kitchen on thursday. luckily screen and everything survived but my hard drive didnt.
it was still on when i picked it up off the floor - the internet had gone off with just a black screen with a white - sign in left hand corner. i turned it off and put it back on and it asked me to boot up in safe mode which i did but it wouldnt boot. after that i got constant black screens or the viao logo would show then nothing more. i took hard drive out and refitted but still same.

My problem is i didnt get round to doing a back up disc - ive called myself everything under the sun believe me!

so i brought a new hard drive (500gb) and a hard drive reader in the hope that some of my files or the system date could be saved.
when plugging in old hd it detected it fine and i was able to restore some items to a usb hd i have. when reading the files though it had lots of data missing.
it was making quite a racket when it was being read i know that.
after 2 days of trying to get system info off it to put on to new hd i have given up as i think it is too damaged to work.

i have searched the world and his dog on the internet trying to find someone with the same laptop model or a way to buy an exact system disc so i can put an original back on with all the drivers but its all rubbish and sites are saying they have the system restore but what they really have is driver downloads or jim'll fix it cds to buy that will only work with an operating system - which if i had i would be fine!

i tried to put a copy of windows vista home edition from another computer on to my laptop in the hope that as long as i had the opperating system working i could download all the drivers but it wont install it??

the only other thing i can think of is to buy windows 7 or a new vista pack (if i can find 1) and try putting that on but im scared to do that due to it not installing it off the vista disc i had??

all advice help ect is appreciated
    thanks

Hi zofluff it's against the forum rules of this board to request that others send you their recovery discs on this board.

You used to be able to download Vista from links on this site and then you would have been able to use your COA on the base of your laptop. The links to this though are now dead.

You could just upgrade to W7 and do a clean install. I see that there are W7 drivers for your model.
    VAIO : Sony Europe

You could also purchase the recovery disc for your model. I see that this is a UK model. I don't know where you're located now but you could contact Sony in the week and query how much a copy of your discs would be.

You should be able to find a contact number on the Sony website.
