Hi all,
first of all i really don't know what to choose IBM TP60 or Sony Vaio SZ all i need is $2000.00 notebook that will last for 3 years.
my work is only for web development i use an ASP.NET CMS + Adobe Photoshop+Office 2007+ Microsoft Visual Studio 2005.
I do care about Battery life as i need to be out for almost 4.5 hours; well sony vaio be the best way to go or i should think about TP 60???????????????????
Thanks for any advises.

Perhaps the FAQ would help us sort it out. As a general proposition, a ThinkPad will offer better quality and support.

t60p for that cool technical support that will make your notebook last for more than 3 years
also, you can get additional battery life with ultrabay batts in t60p -
Hah! Team ThinkPad swarms in to offer their advice!
I'd think either notebook would serve you well. It's worth noting that SZ standard battery power would have trouble pushing you past the 4.5 hour mark --- I don't know what the case is for the ThinkPad. From what I've heard, and my experience, the ThinkPads will offer a reliable notebook that should suit your needs just fine.
That said, the SZ will also do a great job addressing your needs (I use mine for web development as well!) --------------- AND you'll look sexy doing it! For me, the choice between these two would be one of personal preference -- both machines offer unique features/advantages over the other, and have a very distinct 'feel' to them, you know? -
I have ordered both for our company. I have our proj. mgr.'s on lenova t60p's...their work is graphics based and they need the 256 graphic cards and the larger display. Myself and other mgr.'s use sz360p/c's for their compact power, better battery time, lower weight and size for travel. I think you just need to really look at your specific use requirements.

both of them would do fine and I don't even think you'd need to pay 2000$ to last it for 3 years. The more priced T60 is just a better specifications of a less priced one, so a 1000$ T60 will just be same quality as a 2000$ T60, and same goes for sony sz.
Get 3 years warranty if you want to be guaranteed for it to work.
T60 will be quality for sure, but you're risk it for an sz model which looks nice if you care on looks. T60 offers about same battery life as sz, but I know you can configure to get 9 cell one.
Still, both T60 and SZ are good enough to give you 3 years, enough said. -
I suggest you to get T60. I was also in the same situation like you.
I made mistake by purchasing sz. Now Iam regretting for that. SZ quality is poor and sony service sucks. -
I haven't tried any ThinkPad except the one I bought for my mother in law. However, I have tried many Vaios for last 7 years so I can definitely tell you that Vaio will do a fine job for you.
As a matter of fact, I have many colleagues who does Program Management using SZs. I think it always became their official team NotebookMy only concern is that you might be a little short on budget if you are planning to spend $2k since you might need to get extra memory and extended battery which will increase the price close to $3k.

Thank you all for giving me a clear idea about what to chose; and i think by now if i made a choice i will never regret it as you give me really good advices based on your own personal experience.
Again thanks a lot for answering my question. -
Looks like you have closed off the discussion, but I will go ahead and add one more point- I purchased a SZ390 with the extended capacity battery in Nov. With the ability to switch between the Intel 950 and NVidia chip, you can get 6 hours of usage on the 950 and about 4 to 4.5 hours on the NVidia. I loved the notebook, unfortunatedly, someone in Brussels decided they wanted it and my briefcase more. Anyway back to my s460 for now.

Hi jfen060,
it is not closing the discussion but i just went to a near store here in Moscow and i wanted to check what i had red about the electric shocks you can feel when touching the plam rest; and i really was upset to find out that this was right it really happens.
i know there many many VAIO owners who are really happy and glad that they had that notebook as a matter of fact it is the sexiest notebook on the market and the only i have seen offers you the option of having 2 graphic cards and that is really wow for me.
thanks -
I've got both. I use IBM t60p at home and I use my SZ when I'm out and about. This is because Sony is more stylish. But I'll prefer the IBM as the quality and the feel is slightly better. Also sony support sucks, its like having no support (in UK).
-
Well after my bad experience with Acer and having my notebook for repair for two and half months the first thing one should look for is the support quality when you need it and how fast you will have your issue resolved.
