Hi guys,
Hope I can get some help here.
My 6-week old Vaio (EB27FG) crashed quite often lately.
System:
Intel Core i3 M350 @ 2.27 GHz
RAM 4 GB
Win 7 64-bit
The last one happened last night as I was watching on Windows Media Player. The crashes seemed to happen after I installed free antivirus, anti-spyware, anti-adware, etc.
Chronology is as follow:
In the first month, I installed the McAfee free trial supplied in the laptop. After the free trial expired, I uninstalled McAfee, then installed Avira, iObit Security 360, and ZoneAlarm firewall.
(I missed the expiration date, so I only installed Avira etc 1 day after McAfee expiration. But McAfee was uninstalled right before Avira etc installation, with the internet connection stopped. So I suppose, I was still protected).
After installation, I downloaded some files (in RAR), and probably extracted them (with ALZip) - not so sure about the extraction because I don't always extract right after downloading. And when I extract, I usually extract several files (5 to 7 files) at the same time.
Windows Media Player was open in the background (but no file was running), and I was playing Windows game when my laptop crashed for the first time.
No error message; laptop restarted automatically into Windows error recovery page (I chose "Start Windows normally").
I don't think the applications I ran was too heavy for the system - I suspected the installed programs have clashed with one another. So I opened iObit, reduced security level from High to Recommended (only 2 levels are available). Did not change anything to Avira and ZoneAlarm.
Laptop was alright for 1 full day. Next morning, it crashed again, and I chose "Start Windows normally" again.
Next day, after consulting my brother, I uninstalled iObit, replaced with Spybot SD and Lavasoft Adaware.
For few days, nothing happened. Then it crashed again; booted Windows in Safe Mode, did full system scan using Avira, Spybot and Adaware, and found several worms (one of them is Conficker Z.55, couldn't remember the others) and spyware cookies. I had them removed.
Avira also gave warning regarding YouSendItget.exe. (yousendit.com is website for sharing file of big size). This installer is transferred from my old computer, and I only have it saved, not installed, so I ignored the warnings.
(in my old computer, I used ZoneAlarm antivirus and it never gave any warning about YouSendItget.exe)
Laptop was fine for few days, during which I installed Java 32-bit and extracted several batches of 5 downloaded files using ALZip.
Then it crashed again 2 days ago at night time, twice.
What I did: I continued extraction in several batches of 5 files using ALZip.
After I was done, I watched a movie on Windows Media Player. For twenty minutes, everything was OK. Then laptop crashed.
Started Windows normally, then it seemed my laptop hang while loading Windows (could not get to login screen, when it usually only take seconds to load the screen), so I force-shutdown my laptop using the power button.
Re-started Windows normally, opened the same movie (no other program was running/opened in background). Again it crashed within few minutes.
Re-started Windows normally, ran system file checker and did not find any problem. Ran Avira update, reloaded Windows in safe mode (minimal), ran Avira scan. No virus was found, and it gave warning regarding YouSendItget.exe. Since I did not install the application, is it enough if I just delete the installer?
Then, last night, I opened different movie file on Windows Media Player and my laptop crashed again after few minutes.
There was a message: "Windows did not shut down properly, would like to check for solution?" I clicked "OK", then it prompted me to do system restore. Earliest available restoration point was critical update which was a day before Java installation. I chose that, but it was not successful ("File/directory is corrupted and unreadable", "Unexpected error: Catastrophic failure (0x8000FFFF)"
I ran Spybot SD and Ad-aware in safe mode, 2 spyware cookies were found and removed.
Most of the time, I use normal account (no admin priviledge), including when I restart computer after crash.
So it seems that it's Windows Media Player that gives the problem, but this is just my guess. Any suggestion?
By the way, I notice I have problem with my mouse after installation of AVira etc.
I connect my mouse to laptop using Logitech USB expansion port. Three USB ports at right side of laptop: No. 1 is for external HDD, No.2 is for Logitech USB expansion port, No. 3 is for spare.
Most of the time, my mouse is working fine, but sometimes it is not detected and the mouse light does not light up.
If I connect it directly to laptop (either port No. 2 or 3), it works fine.
Logitech USB expansion port itself is working fine: the light indicator is on, thumbdrive connected to any of its port can be detected.
Any idea what's wrong?
How can I check whether the programs I installed (particularly the antivirus, anti-spyware, anti-adware, and the like) are compatible with each other and with Vaio system? (other than the McAfee, I didn't uninstall anything else).
Sorry for the extremely long post. I'm clueless about computer and I don't have friends with computer knowledge who can help me to check my laptop.
Thanks.
PS:
Installed softwares:
Avira 10.0.0.567
ZoneAlarm 9.2.076.000
Spybot 1.6.2.46
Ad-aware 8.3.4

For the most part, WIN7 can function independent from anything but Antivirus. Anything else would just be an annoyance, if you are smart about what sites you visit or what you download. Win7 + ClamWin = Protection plus low resource usage and no after effects from all that extra software.

Does that mean that I don't need those anti-spywares etc if I use ClamWin?
And what can I do now to fix my laptop? Or find what's actually wrong with it..
Pls help - Vaio EB27FG crashed a lot
