Well, to start I am gessing that the sz palm rest are aluminum or an aluminum aloy which presents a problem. When i was working in a metal smiths shop I found that aluminum actruly develops a film over itself which makes it rust proof. know the problem with polishing aluminum with this film on it is that the patina were you do not polish will stand out from were you do most likely. Meaning you will want to polish the entire caising, a difficult job at best. your best bet is to avoid polishing and use a light steel wool. make sure to only steel wool it in the same direction as the brushed grain was done or you will have a contrasting grain
