Ok, guys, probably you'd know this. I want to see how these flash chips are performing in your TZ. Please test with HD-tune.

I am now suffering and testing various ways to see how fast TZ reads SD card.

I have a cheap non-brand 512MB SD card. I stick it into LG s900 that has built-in SD card reader. I can not remember the driver , i think its ELURA or similar (It used Vista-default driver).

    HD tune speed, 10MB/s consistent

lol, a cheap unbranded reaching 10MB/s , isn't this like the fastest SD card?

now I test the same card in TZ (Note its windows XP, using default Ricoh dated back in 2001)

    HD tune speed, 1.5MB/s consistent

    I also have MemoryStick, (Sandisk Duo-Pro 512MB)

    HD tune speed, 6MB/s max

I could not test this memorystick on other device as I don't have any other devices with memorystick (except my sony digital camera)

Overall, I am quite shocked.... what could I say ?
Note that when I tested TZ, it was not using any other resources whatsoever. (that is, no USB devices connected, etc)

I am not too sure why is this, I tried to look for a latest Ricoh driver, but I could not seemed to find one. Also, Windows XP automatic-useless driver update is sooo "doesn't work".

Update and Bump: I have the latest (2007 driver) for Ricoh SD/memory stick for windows XP. and... it still performs 1.5MB/s.. how lame.

Does HD tune show values for sequential or random reads? The sequential numbers are meaningless. The random ones REALLY tell you how fast the device is.

they both similiar. yes I am fully aware of seq vs random.

when I said 1.5MB/s they are really that 1.5MB/s !! sequentially.

This test can be easily tested by copying a large file into it as well.

For a flish disk/usb i do expect randoms to be slightly slower, etc, but should be better than a typical rotational hdd, etc. But I am just worried about the very fundamental aspect of this: that is, even for sequential, its damn slow.
And again, I've tested the exact same SD card in other laptop. They are 10MB/s !

So memory stick should be slower right? I have an 8gb memory stick that i just got yesterday. I transfered a 350mb file from my hard drive to the memory stick and it sure as hell didnt take 3.8 minutes. (350/1.5/60)

So maybe youre wrong, or maybe memory stick is faster? I thought memory stick was supposed to be super duper slow. It took less than a minute to transfer actally.

So not bad, and the playback is just fine, as if I was playing it from my super fast ssd drive :D

carlot, I already said that Memory stick performed at about 6MB/s

1.5MB/s one, I was talking about unbranded SD card.

Please use your HDtune to check the speed of MemoryStick and post your result here.

    Cheers

    Bump.

SD reader is intentionally limited by Sony. Read documentation - high speed not supported.

    Lame. Very lame.

Looking for driver to increase performance.

Lame for sure!.. its extremely frustrating not to be able to use the reader for the many SD cards i have.
