    Hey guys,

Just received a Z610y as a college graduation gift, but it was not purchased with an extended warranty. I'm accident-prone, and am interested in a 3 year extended warranty with ADH.

I talked to someone at Sony Style who said I could purchase the warranty up to 30 days from the date of sale. I noticed newegg.com has one for sale, but when I talked to an associate there, they said it was only for sale with the purchase of a new laptop.

Once the laptop has been purchased, do you have to buy the extended warranty from Sony? Any info. would be helpful.

    Thanks,
    Chris

You can buy the warranty from NewEgg or whomever. It comes as a boxed product that you have to register but NewEgg shouldn't have a problem selling you one.

Are you sure? I talked to two different people at NewEgg and they both said they had to be purchased along with the Vaio - that it was not possible to purchase it afterwards. Maybe I should go to the Best Buy that it was purchased from?

The best bet is to purchase it from Sony as they are kind of proprietary. Just my opinion though.

I bought my warranty from Provantage for much less than Sony charges. It was within 30 days, it is applied, everything just as you'd expect. I went for the full on with ADH as well. (It is a SONY warranty, but you are buying it from Provantage, they ship you the warranty paperwork and you then have it applied through Sony and ... it's just like having bought it from Sony only cheaper.)

I read somewhere that by buying it through provantage you have to have a contract number? Any insight on that?

The warranty is a "boxed product" which is basically the paperwork to guide you through the process and a contract number. It's easy, and you could buy it from anywhere. Provantage has done well for many people here on the boards with their prices on them.

OK, so you buy the "warranty" and then you activate it with Sony and ServiceNET I guess. I just want to make sure the $200 warranty I buy is actually worth something to Sony. The lady I talked to at Sony Style said that it had to be within 30 days, but I could buy it from a legitimate seller, for examaple not ebay.

The Sony warranty is not available from ebay, only from Sony themselves or authorized dealers. By the way, Sony will also require that you send/fax them a copy of your notebook receipt in order to approve your registration. This means that your Vaio notebook has to be purchased from Sony or Sony authorized dealers/resellers.

OK guys, that's great. Thanks for all of your help. I bought the Provantage 3 year ESP with ADH. The laptop was purchased at Best Buy which I am sure is an authorized dealer. Thanks again for all of your help.
