I only have the standard power adapter for my Z. I used to buy a laptop with an extra power adapter. I end up with so many working power adapters while their laptops are all too old to work properly. I am thinking whether I can reuse any of them for my Z. The most recent one is for my ASUS laptop. It outputs 19V-3.43A while my Z adapter outputs 19.5V-4.7A. In addition to the small difference in output, the two adapters also have slightly different sizes of tips. So my question is whether the output differences matter or not? If not, where can I find a tip adapter to make the tip work for my Z? Thanks.

    Small difference?
    19V * 3.43A = 65W
    19.5V * 4.7A =92W
    That's a 40% difference.

But anyhow, while the 0.5V difference is certainly going to be within the acceptable range, the current isn't. When the laptop tries to draw more current than the power brick can give, the best you can hope for is the charging not happening; more likely is blowing a fuse in the power brick, and in the worst case you'll start a fire.

... or you will discharge your battery to death while gaming while the power supply does not deliver enough juice.

I see. Now I look at the second power adapter I have for the ASUS laptop. It has a different specification: It outputs 19V-4.74A, which is about 90W. I suppose that it will it be good to use for Z if I can find a tip adapter (which I don't know where to find).

I just looked at Newegg's Cooler Master RP-095-USNA-A1 Ultra slim 95W Notebook AC adapter w/USB device, and it actually outputs similar current as my second ASUS adapter does. But it is attractive because it is slim and can charge USB device.

I can vouch for the CM USNA95. (not to be confused with last years SNA95)

In addition to my Z12 it also charges my XPAL XP18000 and my work HP laptop.

I am pretty much convinced that I should get a cooler master NA95 instead of trying to reuse the old one. CM is just so versatile.

I went to a local BesyBuy store and unfortunately they don't sell CM USNA95. They have Targus Compact Laptop Charger. It charges both laptop and mobile device as CM does. Does anyone have experience of this charger? I tried some of tips that are supposed to work for ASUS, Gateway and Sony laptops, but none of them can be plugged into these laptops. Does any of you have a similar problem with CM too?

If the Targus doesn't have tips in the box that fit you, then you'll obviously need to find out if they sell alternatives.

For me the CM had the 3 tips I needed right in the box. (Sony Z and HP Elitebook, plus XPAL XP18000 battery pack)

Try this site and click the link that says detailed list of compatible notebooks. Looks like a pretty big list and it's not even comprehensive because my 2 aren't even in there.

Interesting. I checked the list and found my old ASUS and Gateway laptops, but not my Sony Z12 model. The list does not have any VPC models there. How did you find yours in the list?

Targus claims that they can supply extra tips if the tips cannot be found in the box. I don't know how much cost is involved. I rather have an adapter that is ready for use for all my laptop. Another concern I have is that the adapter splits its output into two, one for charging PC and one for charging mobile device via USB port. The two lines look identical without tips, and Targus claims that the adapter automatically adjusts electrical current in each line depending on whether it is plug into a PC or a mobile device. I don't know whether that really works or not and whether it is harmful to my laptop/mobile device. CM may be safer because it has a dedicated USB port for charging mobile device?

The VPC models don't appear on the list but the VGN-Z does and it (apparently) uses the same charger as the VPC-Z.

Have a look here for a discussion about this charger with the VPC-Z.

I didn't. But it charges my Z12 just fine. I think I saw the Z 13 on their list

Thanks for bringing this thread to my attention. I saw it before I got my Z. There are discussions in the thread about Targus and Kinsington adapters, the two adapters I can find in local stores. I will check the thread in detail.
