The builtin wireless has only 1 bar for signal strength even when your right next to the router. If I used a linksys USB adapter it connects fine with 5 bars. I got a driver update from sony - http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNNR220E&upd_id=3345&os_id=28

This utility updates Marvell Atheros Extensible Wireless LAN Driver to version 7.4.2.15 to resolve the following issues:

But it now the onboard adapter says NO wireless access points are available. Can someone provide any suggestions?
    thanks

So your previous driver could only acquire a weak signal, and now your new driver lists no access points?

Try letting Windows update get the driver for you; uninstall the driver and get a wired internet connection.

thanks - I did not do a rollback to the previous one and then try Win update. I will try that.

There was nothing more current than the one sony provided - such as it is.
They DID provide a link to their troubleshooting FAQ - which is down for maint .

still no joy with either driver for onboard wireless (the rollback and autoupdate produced the SAME version of the driver). The front of the sony has a LED when the wireless switch is set ON and the adapter is enabled. It is illuminated as it should be. Event log is as follows

Thank you for the insight, Windows...

One last thing... in Vista's power schemes, it has an option for saving power with wireless cards... check that it is not in power saving mode.

Nope, now power management going on.

Sony has given me an 800# - fun - now I get to dance with them on the phone.
