The DVD drive in my Vaio SZ120 stopped working for no apparent reason. It still reads CD (data and music), but does not recognize DVDs or blank media (CD or DVD; recording to drive enabled). I tried pretty much everything I could think of, the only option left is to do a complete scrub of the HD and system re-install. I would like to avoid it because then I would have to go through a telephone activation of my Adobe and Microsoft applications (they have already been activated twice on this computer.) I would appreciate suggestions on what I could possibly try to make it work again.

Don't know if this will help but there is a new firmware upgrade for the 120. Don't know if it really matters if you have a 120p or a 120p/b but check sonys site and when choosing what model you have on the site, choose auto detect my model. Hope this helps.

The 120p and 120P/B are the same machine, so hopefully the fix should work for you. Let the board know how it went.

its probably a bad drive. I had a sz120 that did that. but it was that way from the start so I swapped the computer.

Well, I decided that I have had enough, and sent the laptop to Sony for a drive replacement. Will let you know in 2 weeks (hopefully) how it went. BTW, I am seriously disappointed with this model. The battery life is horrible - the battery drains itself after 24 hours of the Stand By mode (but lasts significantly longer in Hibernation), the case cracked after 2 months of use (not covered by the warranty - the tech insisted that I had dropped the computer; I didn't), and the trackpad sometimes stops responding (you have to rub it repeatedly for about 15 seconds to make it start working again.) Perhaps my unit is a lemon, but I don't think I will be buying another Vaio any time soon.
