    Hi Guys,

I went into the store yesterday to have a look at a new Sony TZ37. Wow I was amazed at the design and WEIGHT! I currently have a XPS 1330 but this takes the cake really it does

    I have a few qns:
    1. Is the battery life a true 11 hours or even remotely near?
    2. I have seen a few FAQs on reinstalling OSs onto the laptop, can you do Vista without the actual Disk but without all the crap?
    3. Can I play DOTA on this machine? (Boring nights away from home)
    4. Can you get HSDPA on this machine? (Australia)

If you could help with any information etc it would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

hi warney i can help with a couple of questions for you as i'm extremely interested in buying the TZ myself and i'm also in aus

    1. i don't believe so (??)- i see 8 hours get mentioned a bit.
    2. there is a thread on here for a semi-clean install which helps remove the bloatware without doing a full format and new install...maybe that is what you want?
    3. no idea what DOTA is but the TZ is more for browsing purposes and light programs. apparently i can do some light photoshop as long as i bump up RAM to 2G
    4. short answer - NO. long answer - yes if you buy the TZ from japan and have the HSDPA module put in and then you unlock with the help of one of the other threads here. australia does not offer WAN at all on the sony.

the TZ is now superceded as of this week. australia will not see the replacement (TT) until at least mid to late october though (guessing), so keep an eye out for good specials or just haggle like crazy.

    That is cool!

Where abouts are you located Six? I myself am in Sydney!

    1. I was hoping for more than the current 3 Hours on my Dell
    2. Not really, I would prefer the format given the crap that I have seen on it already. I just wanted to know if I need an alternative Vista Disc.
    3. DOTA is a game based on the Warcraft III game itself. So I guess if it can handle Warcraft III or you said you want to do PS then I should be fine.
    4. Can you just order the modules in? Otherwise I may have to buy an alternative.

Where are you looking to purchase yours?

    i'm in central qld :p
makes buying a laptop quite difficult with lack of stores about. i checked out sony central last time i was in brisbane and fell in love with the TZ. and have been ringing them with queries etc. i can buy locally from HN but will buy from brisbane out of preference. i'm also pondering other notebooks still such as the SR, Z and couple other brands.

there is a thread regarding putting in the WAN (i'll see if i can find it) but it looked a little too icky for me. seemed to involve getting both a module and possibly antenna.

none of the sony's from aus will have WAN but if you order from portable one in the US or from japan (pricejapan or conics.net) you can custom make the order and include the WAN. it seems pretty easy to unlock them, japanese one anyway.

if you want local WAN only one i know of right now is Dell. they do have a E4200 coming out (well its out but still not orderable from dell aus online) which is very small and light to. have no idea if this will inlude the WAN though.

check out the new TT as well, may be to your taste and is better specced than the TZ overall.

i think you can get a good 5 hours from the TZ with wifi on from what i've seen indicated, 8 hour no wi-fi. you should double check that though.

Someone on this forum is selling a brand-new TZ they got as a replacement from Sony for about 1800, but I'm not sure on the warranty details. Check out the Buy, Sell, Trade forums.
