Hiya, my brother got his new Sony CR series notebook today, and he is mostly happy with it, his only concern is that the fan seems to stay on almost all the time whenever he's using it to do anything non-trivial (like listening to music while web browsing) and when he's just like browsing in explorer the fan seems to cycle on/off constantly. Is this normal? I tried running MobMeter and SpeedFan but neither gave me any usable info ... MobMeter complained it didn't have admin privs, when it did ... grr Vista lol :) So anyone w comments?

My CR doesn't have that problem.

Furthermore, my fan is so quiet I'd have to place my ear on the computer to hear it anyway.

Thank you for your comments! This is a really annoying problem ... right now it's downloading a file, not doing anything else, certainly nothing taxing (I'm typing this on my own laptop) and the fan literally cycles on and off every 10-12 seconds. I installed NHC and according to that the CPU temp stays at 50-51C and the HD is at 38C ... I noticed by watching NHC's temp readings that the fan seems to turn on whenever the CPU temp goes over 50C ... I watched it as the temp (spontaneously) got up to 52C, the fan stayed on, and shut off once it got back to 50. So is there any way to adjust the fan settings? In the BIOS maybe? I'm thinking that I shouldn't have to resort to installing SpeedFan or something to fix this ...

Can anyone else with a CR (or even other Sony models) please comment? I'll give Sony a call 2mo but I doubt they'll be very helpful :(

Well, the CR190 is supposed to be nearly silent. Maybe you have defective hardware.

I'm thinking that could be the case as well ... the fan definitely seems to cycle on any time the CPU gets over 50C.

I phoned Sony customer support and spoke to two different people ... the first guy started to get us to run chkdsk and then (accidentally?) disconnected the call. The second obviously knew nothing about computers and basically said to phone Sony Style and have it exchanged if we weren't happy. -_-'
