    Greetings,

I currently have a VAIO VGN FZ21M that has the known GPU solder material failure. I had the problem since early 2009 and just now i learned that my model is eligible for a free repair. There are some issues though that i want to clear first before i contact Sony about it.

    1. I don't have a reciept or a proof of purchase of some kind for the laptop. I threw everything away when the official guarantee period was over.

    2. I dont remember the exact purchase date (it asks for it when you try to register your product at the Sony site).

    3. The laptop was open by a technician to do some cleaning maintenance and change the fan.

    4. I cannot sent the hard drive with the laptop cause it contains valuable information.

    5. One of the ram sticks was removed because it was faulty.

    6. I live in Europe.

Is any of the above a problem that will likely interfere with the whole procedure?

    Thanks in advance.

No proof of purchase date, no repair. Do you have a canceled check, can you get a credit card statement, did you register the machine with Sony? If all are answers are no, you're out of luck.

    For Europe, I don't know.
For US, you don't need anything to prove it's yours.

So the first reply is incorrect?

Can you tell me please what the procedure is to get it fixed? It must be the same in Europe as it is in the US, after all it is the same company.

Just contact them really. Under warranty or not, that is a serious issue that has to get fixed and is present in all laptops of the series, whether you changed stuff to it or not.

Just give Sony a call. They have some pretty good customer service in Europe!

The serial number of the laptop should be enough.

Unless the machine was registered, I think the serial number is only going to give a date of manufacturer. The warranty period starts on the day of sale. If the machine sat on a shelf for a while the dates could be different enough that if migh not be under the extended warranty.

But others are right, call Sony Europe and find out.

I'd suggest you post you post your question at http://www.nvidiadefect.com/

Make sure you tell them which country you live in. It's a UK site but other countries may have similar laws. There's tons of background info which may help you.
