I am in market to buy a docking station for my Vaio Z11.
    Sony style link
Question is: Can the docking station support dual monitors via it's VGA + DVI Outputs?

My work laptop is a Dell Latitude and their docking stations support dual monitor config, so I was wondering about this.

    Thank you

nope, it can't no one has gotten the Z to output to dual monitors with the ports on the Z. However, there's talk of setting custom resolutions to 3840x1080 and using a USB -> dual DVI/HDMI for dual monitors... or something like that... but I'm not sure if works (and even if it did, it'd be hella slow)

In short, not as easy as you have it with your dell. It's a serious thing that Sony did being that the Z, IMO, is geared more towards the mobile professional...

I believe it can work with the Matrox DualHead2Go or TrippleHead2Go. I have made custom resolutions that work for dual 1080P output... but I don't have the Matrox Box yet so I can't tell you for sure. I WILL be getting one of these Matrox boxes in the near future.

The USB/DisplayLink will work but the performance of it is not that great. It would be fine for Office programs but not good for Video or anything that needs rendering.

IMO I think Sony should think twice while in development of what features they should opt to include considering it is a business line performer and it is a nice class laptop. Hopefully the next revision due will feature this.

    Thanks for confirming.

p.s. I was looking for native support.

The Matrox adapter is pretty close to native support. The more experiments I do the more sure I am that it will work. I enabled 3DTV play yesterday and tricked my computer into thinking that the TV I have is 3D capable. When I turned it on it sent out the framepacked 1.4A signal to the TV. The frame packed signal is two 1080P frames staked with 45 blanking lines in between. If the Z can push this resolution over HDMI then it can certainly work to push dual 1080P through the Matrox adapter.

I plan on buying the Matrox adapter soon. I'll be posting my results on the forum when I get it all working perfectly. The Z is very capable. It is capable of doing a lot of things that it wasn't advertised as doing, like 3D for example.

Someone should buy the SB dock, VGP-PRS20, and see if it fits the Z. All Sony docks have used the same connector and I believe many people have used TZ Vaios with the S series dock in previous generations. (I see people selling the TZ computer online with the S dock).

If we look at a picture of the Z's bottom: http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/02/sonyvaiozgallery13.jpg We can see that the dock connector is off center, but to the correct side to allow it to sit on the dock without hitting those side nubs. The only advantage to use the S dock would be built in HDMI, but it may be worth it.

that dock might work but it wouldn't solve the dual monitor issue.
