I am this on behalf of my roommate, who had a Sony laptop for about a year and a half before the motherboard died. First it was having issues with the RAM, which he replaced and it helped for about a month, and then it stopped working altogether. He only had the 1 year warranty (not the best idea, I know), and so he is now stuck without a laptop.

As far as I know he takes good care of his laptop in terms of dusting and whatnot.

My question is whether it is possible to get Sony to do anything about it, such as give him a reduced price for a motherboard. I could be wrong about this, but I feel like with companies like Dell, you're likely to get something out of a call to them because they want you to keep buying Dell. So essentially I am wondering whether calling and firm, getting the name of whoever you speak to, asking to speak to their supervisor, explaining that you have no reason to continue purchasing laptops from a company that offers that level of quality control and then wont do anything about it, etc etc...

    Think it'll do any good?

If you're in the USA... good luck... Even though i've never had to deal with them (thank god?), there are tons of reports about sony's horrible customer service. However, there are some that have had good experiences with Sony customer service, but they're outnumbered, maybe they took a different approach.

From what i've read so far regarding sony's customer service... if your friend was still in warranty, they'd take it... then after two weeks you'd call in and they'd tell you the part was backordered... and that they'll call you when they get the part... and another two weeks past and you call again and they say they'll get the part next week... and by the end of it they'll have ur laptop for a month... and when you get it back there's a few scratches on ur lid... OR, for a certain few lucky people, they'll send over a technician to your house the next day and replace ur motherboard in your house. <-- VERY RARE

In short, i don't think it will work. However, it doesn't hurt to call.
