    Hi everyone.
I have a question regarding the vaio Z114. I have a 1600 res screen. The question is can I buy a 1920 res screen on ebay and replace it?

Thank you for your quick answer but do you know somebody that actually did that? I went to the sony style store today and they said it's impossible because the 2 panels have different connector and the mainboard support is different. So I'm really confused right now.

Well, lemme think, Zoinks did it (when he broke his). Put it like this, Sony would not produce 2 motherboards just to switch out 1 panel

Thanks. That does make sense but I just want to make sure before buying another panel, it costs almost $500. I wish somebody who did the change could confirm this for me.

It works. Both LCDs have the same connector. There are no different motherboards, info from official service guide. There are some guys here that did the replacement / upgrade already, too lazy to search.

Sony reps talking BS as usual.

Does it matter that the backlight needs to be brighter for the hi-res screen or is that included in the panel?

True. But would Sony produce two motherboards to prevent someone from switching out a panel?

It's included in the panel. Actually, both backlights do have the same brightness but due to the lower transmission of the higher density display, it appears not so bright compared to the 1600px screen at full brightness. That's why sony sets the maximum brigtness setting lower on 1600px models, that can be unlocked by the registry patch.
