i just bought my first laptop computer, sony vaio. have a question regarding the battery. does it make any difference at all if we power cycle the battery like you do a cell phone? like letting the battery drain all the way to empty every once in a while and fully charge it, etc. is it bad for the battery if you don't do that or does it make no difference, good or bad, at all? also, will it diminish the life of my batter if i have my laptop plugged in 90% of the time?

    thanks in advance :)

It's ok to have your laptop, with its battery attached, plugged in for long times. This will not affect battery life.

Batteries have a certain number of cycles, that is a fixed number. It's not bad to recharge a battery when it has, let's say, 40 percent energy left. You are only throwing away the 40 percent that's left, it will not diminish the life time of your battery.

Lithium Ion batteries don't require being discharged and then charged. Its actually the same case with most mobile phones, because they also use Lithium Ion batteries. Notebook batteries generally don't like to be charged fast, and used up to fast either. Temperature is also a huge factor, because it can shorten their overall lifetime. A report was issued which compared runtime and the tempeature at which a battery operated, and results make for some good reading. Have a look at the followig link for more information:

Donno where you get your info from. We are in Li-ion battery cells now not nickle. Theres no fixed number for any battery cell, its all about wear, with that in mind theres so many factors that can effect the wear level even when not using a battery.
