The main reason I never sprang for a Vaio Z is that I need to be able to drive a 30" monitor and Ivy Bridge (and prior) platforms were not capable of outputting 2560x1600 (at least not without hacked drivers and reduced refresh rates). It appears this was due to limitations on Intel's side as the HDMI 1.3 and 1.4 specs do support higher resolutions as do most modern HDMI cables. It appears that Intel may have resolved this with Haswell as all the specs I've seen seem to indicate that it can support 4k+ resolutions via HDMI. Now I'm just hoping manufacturers don't screw things up by implementing legacy HDMI ports.
I am seriously considering getting the highest-end Duo 13 (a poor shadow of the Z but with HD 5000 graphics it's still more compelling to me than the Pro 13) but will only pull the trigger if it's HDMI ports support high-resolution output.
Can anyone who's already purchased a new haswell SONY laptop confirm if this is the case?
If so, I'd be hugely appreciative.
Thank you.

Hi,
since last week I own the duo 13. I thought, 2560 via HDMI is possible via the intel driver settings:
2560x1440 oder 2560x1600 über HDMI ansteuern - Notebookcheck.com Technik/FAQ
BUT, the vaio has a customized intel driver. I could not find any way to set custom resolutions. Only 1080p ist is possible via hdmi.
Now, I will get an USB3-> Displayport-Adaptber to solve this problem for me and HOPE that sony will patch the driver in the future. -
I have the same problem with Duo 13. I wan't to buy a new monitor with resolution 2560x1080 and try to set custom resolution first from the blog in 7cookies's suggestion but can't found the Custom Resolutions as Graphics Options sub menu.
However I can enable that menu using this steps.
Run regedit as Adminitrator then go to this key
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Intel\Display\igfxcui\CustomResolutions"
Then modify the value of
"ShowCustomResolutions"
From 0 to 1.
Now right click on windows desktop and go to "Graphics Options" menu, then click on "Custom Resolutions" sub menu and click "Yes" on warning dialog.
Then "Display Custom Resolutions" window is opened.
I can add new custom resolutions, but no my custom resolution is shown in Windows Screen Resolution or Intel Graphics Properties...
7cookies,
Have you already bought DisplayPort adapter yet?
If yes, which model (I'm looking at USB32DPPRO) and can it be configured to 2560x1080 or just 2560x1600 / 2560x1440?
Thank you.Ashers likes this. -
Hi,
I've tried this hack. The registry-entry works perfectly!
BUT I can only set up 2560x1440 40HZ or 30HZ.
In both cases, my monitor (connected with a hdmi->dvi-cable) won't work :-(
I've tried some USB3->DP-Adapter. But the lag makes it unuseable. So, now I'm using an external touch-tft from acer with full-hd. -
Finally I just bought 2560x1440 monitor (ASUS PB278) to use with my Vaio Duo 13.
I use just a normal HDMI cable.
It allow me to select 2560x1440 screen resolution after changed Multiple display mode to "Extend these displays" or "Show desktop only on 2" without any hack needed.
May be because this monitor already support 2560x1440 via HDMI and Sony Vaio Duo also support 2560x1440 via HDMI as well.
But when I called to Sony Support center, he told me that we cannot use 2560x1440 extended display because they can't test it (May be they don't have QHD monitor).
And when I went to Sony Store with my laptop and asked one of them to test by laptop with their monitor, he allowed me test with HDTV (1920x1080) but didn't allow me to test with 4K TV.
Here is a note from ASUS page ( PB278Q - Monitors & Projectors - ASUS) that make me designed to buy this monitor.
"While the PB278Q supports up to 2560 x 1440 WQHD resolutions including DVI-dual link, HDMI and
DisplayPort, some graphics cards only support up to 1920 x 1200 resolution content transmission via HDMI.
Please check with your local distributor or retailer on the hardware limitations of your laptop or desktop."
Now I can use Sony VAIO Duo 13 with external display at 2560x1440 60Hz.DrKersh likes this. -
Hi,
okay, that's great news. I will order this monitor tomorrow and test ist... -
MUHAHA!
Today, my PB278Q is here.
IT WORKS GREAT:
Connected via HDMI
Then I had to restart windows there it is: 2560x1440 without any hacks.
The quality is brilliant.
I bought exact this model:
Asus PB278Q 68,6 cm LED-Monitor: Amazon.de: Computer & Zubehör
