Question for Z and SR owners from an SZ owner

If you recently moved from SZ to Z or SR please share your opinions...more

I have enjoyed my SZ over the last two + years. I have upgraded my SZ along the way and currently (see signature below) have a laptop that is still very quick by today's standards. I might have upgraded laptop models sooner if I was stuck with the old 1.83ghz processor or 5400 hard drive, that initially shipped with my notebook. My question is for anyone who has purchased a new Sony Z or SR? Is it possible to access and replace the hard drive? CPU?

I know there are things that I have not been able to upgrade like FSB or GPU but I feel my SZ is still very capable. My current hard drive is 320gb seagate 7200rpm which bests some ssd drives with 80mbs reads and I don't think it ships on any Z yet? I would (most likely) be purchasing a "Z" next but since I have 3 batteries, docking station, several power supplies now, I am reluctant to jump until I feel a serious performance gap is present. I have also noticed a sudden drop in SZ pricing on remaining inventory and that seems attractive to me considering my investment in accessories. I found an SZ691 premium model for under $1,300 online. I guess I am really wondering if the Z has enough to justify going forward from my current platform? I know that is mostly subjective so asking questions about how upgradeable the Z's and SR's are is the best I can think for now.

Do any of you miss not having a PCMCIA slot? I use mine a lot now and I know the expresscard slot is capable but I use both slots almost always. My current setup is pcmcia = verizon evdo air card and expresscard for 16gb ssd.

Overall, I have owned 10 laptops. Most of them have been Sony but none of them were as easy to upgrade as the Sony SZ and that made ownership more enjoyable. If the Z or SR can best this experience I will be very happy. Thanks for taking the time to read and respond to my questions.

uhm 16gb SSD va expresscard for ready boost? sounds like something fun I would do if that means I will be getting some startup speed boost.
