I think you can buy from third parties, like provantage. Accidental coverage only works if bought within 30 days of purchase. Not sure if it covers water damage. The terms says "Accidental Damage from Handling" and supposedly only covers accidents that would occur through normal usage. You should probably call Sony and actually ask.

to what extent the damaged laptop will be covered.yeas, spills are covered in accidnetal 4 yrs warranty but what about a broken laptop from the corner just below the cd-drive. not working. both laptop base and lcd have broken form the corner to about 3 inches towards the center of the laptop as it got overran by a car.

Here's a link to an explanation of Sony's plans which a friend forwarded to me: http://b2b.sony.com/Solutions/lpage.do?page=/sco/esp.html&name=Sony Extended Service Plans&prod=0

Of course, if the notebook was purchased under Platinum Master Card, for example, the manufacturer's warranty time is doubled (exclusive of extended service plans) up to one year. The purchaser is responsible for the estimate which must be submitted to Master Card. And Platinum Master Card purchases have an automatic 30-day theft and accident coverage as well.

If the notebook was purchased in retail, then it is possible to purchase extended plans from the retailer and each has its own rules for when it can be purchased and how the plan operates.

    Good luck!

I've got ours covered by our home insurance carrier for theft and accidents. Pretty cheap.

Did you have to get a special rider or is it just included in home furnishings and equipment? And how does that cover off-site accidents?

It's a special coverage, because our normal deductible is like $500, but that's not the case with the notebooks. I'll get specifics from the agency tomorrow.

Edit: They sent a "Policy Declarations" the other day, after I added the Vaio. It's being covered by Inland Marine with the following coverage amounts:
    • $500.00 Apple Laptop
    • $1,600 Apple Macbook Pro MA895LL/A
    • $1,150 Sony Vaio Notebook VGN-FW465JB
    $49.00 Total Electronic Equipment Coverage
