    Hi All,

I have a legal copy of Windows 7 Ultimate installed on my new vaio Z. My problem is that now I need this copy for my Desktop gaming rig which is also new :D I have downloaded a pirated copy of Win 7 Pro, can I use it with the serial that came with my laptop and make a new clean install?

Also will reformatting affect my SSD drives??

    Thanks in advance.

If you mean the key that's on a sticker on the bottom of the Z, no, you can not re-use that. It's tied to the hardware it runs on.
If you mean you bought Windows 7 separately, that depends on whether you bought a full retail version or OEM version. Both will probably let you install it, but you won't be able to activate it a second time. But with the retail license, you can call Microsoft and have them transfer it to your other machine.

That said, I expect (and would like to see) the admins here delete your question, since you state that you pirated a copy of Windows. This is not the forum for that.
If you can afford a $2500+ laptop in addition to a gaming desktop, you can also afford to buy a copy of Windows.

    @arth1

Thanks for your reply, and you're right about the admins deleting my question, sorry for posting such question I was a bit confused. And yes I did purchase a full retail version of Windows 7 Ultimate which i'm willing to use on my desktop pc.

So I guess i'm gonna restore my Z from the recovery discs without the bloatware crap...

oh btw...I meant to use the key on the sticker with the downloaded copy of Windows 7 Pro on my Vaio Z...not on the other computer..I just don't want all the bloatware..I want a fresh install of 7 Pro and use my full retail of Ultimate on my desktop pc..

speedmax you want to put the original win 7 pro back on computer without bloatware ? dont use the key on the bottom of your laptop you need to use the oem key that came installed on your laptop. do you still have recovery drive intact from original?

speed max you need to reinstall original win 7 pro /run abr to get the key and cert / then do clean install of win 7 the run the back up of abr to insert key and cert and activate as oem / then istall drivers from sony support for your model and there you go clean install and back to oem . no need ever to use key on computer in this day in age . dont really know why its there .

Alright william that's clear for me now....I'll do this in a few...but will I be able to install my full retail of ultimate on my desktop again and activate it? I mean since I have activated it already on my laptop won't that be a problem, did it get attached to my Z's hardware?

Is it possible to do a recovery with the dvds without the crapware and only the drivers?

I had some problems with a fresh install of win 7 ulitmate on my viao yesterday, setup runs normal, but after installing all the drivers and all, i didnt had the FN buttons working and the speed-stammina setting didnt work either, so for now i did a recovery, but the only option was to recover with drivers and crapware, uninstalled everything i didnt need, but would rather have a fresh install.

Will it have to do because its comes orginal with win 7 pro and i put on win 7 ulitmate?

Will have an other go this weekend..

neosoulstar what model #? did you install the drivers and utilities in the correct order ? they have to be installed in a spacific order for them to work correctly and if you have older z you might have to upgreade your bios for the install of win 7 with the updated drivers and utilities .

Hmm..I had a fully functional vaio Z without the crapware after I did the fresh install...no issues whatsoever, FN working perfectly and everything else..make sure you install something called Sony Notebook Utilities..I think it has something to do with the FN buttons..

as Williamd mentioned you have to install the sony drivers and apps in a specific order to get everything working.

    Good Luck :)

    Update:

Just recovered my Z with the Recovery DVD's and successfully backup up my activation info with ABR !!!

Time to do a clean install again....sigh...but this time with Windows 7 Pro then restore the license info. Hope all goes well :)

Oh btw...Why does the recovery partition show after a clean install?? Is there a way to hide it? I think it's called System Recovery or something like that..

    @ SpeedMax and Williamd

I got a VPCZ11X5E, downloaded all the drivers from the sony website, everything was installed, only one thing in device manager, but that had to do with the card reader i saw.

I followed one of the guides here : http://forum.notebookreview.com/6155868-post96.html

Maybe i messed up with the install order, will try again this weekend, wiht a fresh install of a win 7 pro version instead of win 7 ulitmate.

speed max the recovery will be there unless you delete and merge the partions together . it is the factory recovery for your vista install . not to much space used . i always keep mine just in case . never hurts to be safe . you can do a complete recovery install of original with that .

Now I came into a new idea....I would like to make an image of my partitions on DVD so that whenever I want to restore my system it restores it with my drivers and apps without the need to install everything from scratch after the clean install...I used to use Norton Ghost 2003 for such thing long time back..not sure what tools I can use for that specially with SSD's....any suggestions for what app I can use to image my drives?

Hi guys, managed to do a fresh install too, think i messed up the order to install the sony apps, couldnt find all apps on the dutch sony site, grabbed some from the us site and all works, only the viao update not, but thats not a big problem for now, maybe i need to use the dutch update file for that one.

@ speedmax, dont know about a backup tool, havnt used that for a while either, will have give that a try too soon and give ya an update othterwise in a private message, think your dutch too rite?
