Can I upgrade the SSD to a new one from newegg or is it Sony specific?

1.8" drives will generally fit if you strip the casings off of them.
I upgraded my stock Toshiba SSDs to Crucial C300 drives

Do you have Z11 or later? The adapters changed to micro sata later, so it became possible to do our own upgrades. Before, the adapters were proprietary so we have to use Sony drives. It's still possible to upgrade but you'll first have to get the cable with with newer adapters.

More specifically it seems that all Z11 used a proprietary FFC
Many of the Z12, Z13,Z14 use a microSATA connector
except if you have Quad RAID, if you have Quad RAID you have a proprietary FFC
If you find that you have a proprietary FFC for the SSDs but you still want to upgrade you can buy the microSATA cable (one cable works for two drives)

The part number for the cable is A-1781-464-A
You can see it in the diagram on page 10 of the manual
It is part 520 in the diagram, you can open the attached spreadsheet to reference the part # to the diagram number.

Thanks, my exact model is the VPC1190X.

I was looking at your signature (Cowboy) and noticed you use the ViDock4. Will that also work in the VPC1190X and how is it working for you? What card do you use in it?
