    Hi everyone

I plan to settle with the S580. What should I be aware of. I don't see any review on this specific model, only on the older S series.

My second question is whether I should buy extended warranty. I heard that some credit card covers it. How can I find out besides calling for support? Is there a term to this like of warranty?

    Thanks!

S580 is still new so review wont be out soon.. I have the S58GP.. the Asia version of it I think.. minus the 100 gig hdd.. mine is 80 only.
IMO heat and fan is not really an issue if u ask me. infact many laptops in this price range suffer from same heat problem. I thik the fan can be resolved by dl ing the bios ? see the sticky
I haven't checked what version is mine but as far as I experience, heat is minimal and even when running photoshop, firefox, winamp, bittorrent and many others in the bg like avg, vaio media, the noise is still minimum. Maybe the Asia version is set abit differently from US one? I don't know...

Sorry guys, how long does it take to build and ship a VGN S-580? If I order within 2-3 days will I be able to have one for the first week of December?

They took exact 3 days for building my machine and one week for ground shipping (from San Diego to Chicago).
If you order today, they may done it just by thanksgiving and you can choose 2 or 3-day shipping, you may get it the first week if everything is in stock.

Nice to know you are in Chicago too!
BTW, If you want to have a look of S5xx, I saw a S560 in CompUSA downtown Chicago.

I'd like to ask a question also. I've also decided to get the S580. Does anyone know if Sony has Christmas sales after Thanksgiving?

    Thanks in advance.

All the issues about the new S has been written about, might wanna do a search on the 560 or 580 (Mainly heat/fan issues, battery jiggling, and Screen dim on the sides)
Duffy gave a pretty good review of his new 560.

I think there were quite a few more brief reviews somewhere in the forum

I "guess" there will be rebates everywhere of S560 during X'mas since it's probably the time they should launch S6xx. Not sure about S580 since it's customized line.

There's already a $100 rebate on the S580/570/560/550 through April 30, 2006. There are rebates on a number of other Vaios as well. Are you expecting something better than this in the near future? And what makes you think the S6 series is coming soon? The S5 series is so new there are hardly any reviews of it out there yet.

Please correct me if I were wrong. Sony release the first S in 2004. Now, only about 20 months, they have already had S1xx-5xx, 4 months to launch a new one in average. When you fine extra rebates from BestBuy (they even had 100 instant discount plus 100 rebates for S460), CompUSA... it's time to expect new machines. This is SONY!

You may be right! I wish I could take advantage of those other rebates but I want internal Bluetooth and as I understand it you can only get that in the custom-built S580. So I'd have to buy from SonyStyle.

From what I remember the S4 came out in February or March, and the S5 in September. It's a six month product cycle I believe. I wouldn't expect to hear about the next one until February, and actual deliveries to start in late February to early March. Anyone with an S4 remember their delivery date?

Does anyone know if you can order the S580 in black? I checked the options and I didn't see case color as an option.

Edit: Nevermind, saw in the specs that black is standard.

if u need it now, go get it.. I figure the upgrade won't be much difference probably just some gfx upgrade. Plus, it will sure consume more power and means shorter battery life since they are using the same battery. Go figure ;)

W3V isn't as light-weight as S series. I don't see much fan issue with S480 here. In fact, I love it very much... much I'm selling it for BX540... or S580 with bluetooth.

One thing you should be aware of: the VAIO S-series screen does not live up to the hype. It has uneven backlighting problems.
