I got a new Sony SZ1XP and in process of sanity checking the components.

    1. Does someone know how to verify for the dead pixels?

    2. I get a weird fan noise constantly, even when I run just notepad. Any VAIO Power Management configuration needs to be done? By default, its now tuned to Speed.

    3. The inbuilt webcam is really useless. Anyway, can I use my external cam inplace of it, as it always picks up the inbuilt webcam by default.

    4. I'm thinking of dual booting with Ubuntu Linux. Will that degrade the performance of the machine. I mainly want to use Windows for playing games and some windows only application, whereas I will be using Linux for most of my tasks.

    Cheers--

You probably want to use something like Dead Pixel Buddy to test it.

It won't degrade your performance at all, besides the disk space you give up for the install. Getting everything to work properly under linux may require a little fiddling, I'd suggest searching tuxmobil.com and linux-on-laptops.com to see if someone else has already had luck with this model... although looking at the specs, the only thing you're liable to have problems with is the internal webcam.
