I have been doing some research on a new laptop for travel and class use including some light video editing, and the Vaio CW and Vaio Z series have come to my attention recently as a good option. I have a few questions for you, however, before I make a decision on a purchase.

The laptop will be used for occasional video editing and graphic design work with the Adobe CS4 suite. I have a good desktop that I used for the majority of this work, however, as well as my gaming so it wouldn't need a whole lot of graphics power but still capable of some light gaming. The only time I use this laptop really is while I am out and about doing business work or class work, so mobility is really important.

I have been looking more into the CW because of a slightly larger screen which would be nice for when I am doing photoshop or video production work on the computer, even if it has a lower resolution it would still be plenty for my needs really. The nVidia GT 230M graphics are also more powerful than the Z series 9300M GS graphics. And finally, the cost seems noticeably less for the CW compared to a similar Z notebook.

However, some things are unclear on the specifications on the CW. On the sonystyle.com website they specify it as having DDR2 memory. However, the models available through newegg.com specify having DDR3 memory. Which does this system actually run? Also, what is the build quality of this notebook like? My other alternative that I have been looking into is the ASUS N81 as the ASUS has been well known for their quality. Both the ASUS N81 and the Vaio CW would be about the same price for the same performance and components but the CW would be somewhat lighter if I am correct?

yes the CW has really solid build quailty comparing to the Z series, the Z series has carbon fiber casing and is a business laptop and is built so, but it comes with a hefty price tag.
CW is really powerful all round and it comes in a very suitable price range. and yes it uses DDR3 RAM there was a mistake before the laptop was released about the RAM being DDR2, they still havent fixed that mistake, but i can confirm that it has DDR3 RAM

If you have any further questions about the CW, feel free to post in the CW owner's lounge in the forums. ;)

Thank you both for those quick and helpful replies! That pretty much answers the questions I had on the matter, and furthers my focus on the CW as my possible purchase choice.

    Hi,

I have following questions regarding VGN-CW13FX/B model.

    1. Does this laptop if purchased from US come with International warranty? I saw it's price as $800 on Sony website. Does that price include international warranty as well? Or warranty/service available in US only?

    2. Does this model come with carry case by default? Is it included in above price?

    3. I heard from someone that there is compatibility issue of Windows XP with this model. Is that true?

I know these questions can be asked at Sony customer serivce but I am not in US and therefore glad to know if someone can answer that.

    Thanks,

    ParagJ
