Recently I doubled the RAM in my VAIO VGN-A297XP to 2Gb (2 x 1Gb), the BIOS recognised the extra RAM and most programmes worked fine.
However I use this laptop for video editing using Avid XP Pro (v5.7.2) and when I tried to open this programme it stalled early in the startup and then ate up all the RAM, it took about 15 minutes of perseverance with task manager to stop it.
I did a check on both RAM sticks and they were clear of errors. The Avid programme runs fine when only one stick is installed (both work) but can't cope with the pair installed.
I have been advised to upgrade the BIOS by Crucial.com. But this is a Sony Laptop(!!!) so firstly finding a suitable BIOS update on the Sony website is impossible and secondly with all the horror stories I have heard I don't think I want to attempt it. However I have found eSupport BIOS Agent Version 3.66 ( http://www.esupport.com/global/upgrade.cfm) which proposes an upgrade.
Has anyone had experience of updating the BIOS in this Sony Laptop (VGN A297XP in this case)? And do you think this will solve the problem?
Any advice welcome.
