One of my RAM sticks just died. Need to buy a replacement ASAP. VPCZ115GG, 2x 2GB (total 4GB).

    MT16JSF25664HZ-1G1F1 2GB DDR3 PC-8500 1066MHz 204pin

    1. Should I buy just one new 2GB module or replace both together?

    2. Should I go for 2x 4GB instead, to get 8GB total as opposed to my previous 4GB? Currently running with only 2GB, and feeling the difference.

    I'm looking at this:
    http://www.amazon.in/Crucial-CT5126...1_9?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1472873823&sr=1-9

This says it is compatible, but lists other part numbers (newer?) in the full list of compatible memory.
    http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/ct51264bf160b
    http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for//vaio-vpcz115gg

Anything else I should be aware of?

I would just add one new 4 GB! I have 2+4 from the start and suits perfectly, rarely would i need more than 5 GB ram.

What I really want to know is will the PC-12800 RAM work in a system designed for PC-8500? Has anyone actually used PC-12800 RAM in a VPCZ1?

Should be fine, my Dell Latitude E5510 (also a Nehamlem/Westmere-gen laptop) is now running with a pair of 4GB PC3-12800 DDR3 RAM. The RAM frequency will simply be capped at 1066MHz (PC3-8500), with another advantage of lower latency compared to PC3-8500 RAM running at their rated frequency.

Thanks. Just what I wanted to know. Going for the 2x4GB configuration.
I suppose another advantage would be lower power, since the RAM is effectively being underclocked.

Uh oh... didn't mean to recommend 2 x 4GB RAM over 4GB + 2GB RAM. 6GB RAM is more than enough for everyday tasks.
Just don't wanna lead others to spend on unnecessary things because of my words, but anyway more memory doesn't hurt, you'll feel the difference between 2GB, 4GB and 8GB RAM.

I actually prefer having two identical RAM modules in my system - I suppose this is from the days when dual channel memory first appeared on the scene, where things just wouldn't work right unless both modules were identical. Kind of made things easier for the memory controller, not having to figure out timings that will suit both modules, nor having to match latencies. Modern memory controllers have greatly improved capabilities, so I might well be wasting money, but hey, cheaper than buying a new laptop.
Btw. have you checked out the new Razer Blade specs? GTX1060 graphics. Need to win a lottery, pronto.

That makes sense, after all buying an extra 4GB RAM shouldn't cost you an arm and a leg.

And yeah just checked the spec, quite amazing given its size. Then I looked at the price and I immediately closed the tab...

    Digging through the Arrandale datasheet:

    System Memory Support
    • One or two channels of DDR3 memory with a maximum of one SO-DIMM per
    channel
    • Single- and dual-channel memory organization modes
    • Data burst length of eight for all memory organization modes
    • Memory DDR3 data transfer rates of 800 MT/s (SV, LV, ULV) and 1066 MT/s (SV,LV)
    • 64-bit wide channels
    • DDR3 I/O Voltage of 1.5 V
    • Non-ECC, unbuffered DDR3 SO-DIMMs only

    • Theoretical maximum memory bandwidth of:
    — 12.8 GB/s in dual-channel mode assuming DDR3 800 MT/s
    — 17.1 GB/s in dual-channel mode assuming DDR3 1066 MT/s
    • 1-Gb, and 2-Gb DDR3 DRAM technologies are supported for x8 and x16 devices
    • Using 2-Gb device technologies, the largest memory capacity possible is 8 GB,
    assuming dual-channel mode with two x8, double-sided, un-buffered, non-ECC,

    SO-DIMM memory configuration
    • Up to 32 simultaneous open pages, 16 per channel (assuming 4 Ranks of 8 Bank
    Devices)
    • Memory organizations:
    — Single-channel modes
    — Dual-channel modes - Intel® Flex Memory Technology:
    Dual-channel symmetric (Interleaved)
    Dual-channel asymmetric
    • Command launch modes of 1n/2n
    • Partial Writes to memory using Data Mask (DM) signals
    • On-Die Termination (ODT)
    • Intel® Fast Memory Access (Intel® FMA):

Seems I was right about the identical modules. galaxyge: your 2+4 configuration is probably working as 2GB+2GB dual channel interleaved access + 2GB non-interleaved access. 4GB full speed, 2GB half speed.

I installed windows 10 and run 2 weeks. Everything is good. my pc (VPCZ139GG/XQ intel® Core™ i7-640M Processor 2.80 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 3.46 GHz)

    Memory DDR3 data tranfers 1066(must be use 1066, other 1067, 1333 or 1600 or above not working) 2X 8GB, I/O Volyage 1.5( cannot use 1.35V)

However, setup to 8GB, can use to DDR3 ,1066,1067, 1333,1600 etc. is working.
I/O Volyage must be 1.5V( cannot use 1.35V)

    Bought two of these
    Crucial 4GB CT51264BF160B 204-pin SODIMM DDR3 PC3-12800
Working fine. Running cool. Mode: Dual; symmetric. 1066MHz combined (533MHz each).

Does anyone know how I can tell whether the RAM is running at 1.35V or 1.5V? These modules can do both, but I still want to know. Motherboard is not telling. If anyone knows where to measure, I have a digital multimeter.

This one is DDR3 1600MT, as same time can support 1066,1067, 1333 and 1600 DDR-RAM
So RAM can running 1.35 and 1.5 both.
    https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-Single-PC3-12800-SODIMM-204-Pin/dp/B005LDLV6S

However, if u want your VPCZ1 can run 16GB, only 1066 DDR-RAM, 1.5V, CL-7 can do that (Cannot not use 1067, 1333 or 1666 or above, 1.35V and 1.5V Ram Replace)
Compare "Apple Macbook Pro, MC374LL/A Model No: A1278(2010)", also can update to 16GB(only can use 1066 DDR-RAM)

    I have a lowly i5 M540 2.53 GHz. The datasheet says:
Using 2-Gb device technologies, the largest memory capacity possible is 8 GB,
    assuming dual-channel mode with two x8, double-sided, un-buffered, non-ECC,
    SO-DIMM memory configuration
I can't argue with that. The motherboard can do better, the RAM can run faster, but the CPU can't handle any more than what I've got now.

However, even 8 GB is too much for me. I was happy enough with 4 GB, but the price difference wasn't much, so I got 8 GB instead. I don't expect to use the 7.68 GB RAM that is now available to me.

Anyone have any ideas how to find out if the RAM I've got is running at 1.35V or 1.5V?

Hi anytimer, this is not difficult question because DDR 1066 RAM had not 1.35V, from 1333 above has 1.35 or 1.5

Hi anytimer, I also have another suggestion to update the VPCZ1 evident. such as change to hard disk Samsung 512GB PM851 50mm SATA III (6G) mSATA SSD Solid State Drive MZMTE512HMHP
I sure the PC speed up very fast ^_-

You really need to improve your English comprehension skills. Your reply clearly shows that you haven't understood my question. The RAM I bought can run at 1.35V or 1.5V. What I want to know is: Is it running at 1.35V or is it running at 1.5V? What voltage is the motherboard supplying to the RAM modules?

Sorry! I make a big mistake here. In VPCZ1 all model only can run 1.5 V
    1.35V for 2013 after model

    Another I know that we used not DDR 1066 RAM(1067,1333,1600 or above, max only update to 12GB (1 X 8GB + 1 X 4GB = 12GB)

So do you run 16GB (2x8)? If so what company are the chips from?

    Hi Mates,

Can anyone run 16GB (2x8) RAM in Vaio VPCZ1/VPCZ13? If YES, can you provide a link to the RAM modules you got.

I need as much RAM as I can put since I do a lot of development and running some databases.

    Yes...You can type " 16GB Dual Kit 2 x 8GB 204pin DDR3-1066 SO-DIMM 1066 PC3-8500 (1066MHz, CL7)" looking for it on Google.

It says for Apple but I doubt it matters. Codly, have you tested any modules and got 16Gb in VPCZ1? It very important for these not to have errors when laptop is running since likely it may accumulate and gradually write bad data to the hard drive and blue screen the laptop.

I don't know what Codly is using. I just put in the 16 Gb Komputer Bay memory 2x8Gb and my BIOS and windows can only see 8gb. My laptop model is VPCZ13HGX. If the BIOS can see one plate of 8Gb why it cannot see another. It's more like a rhetorical question.. I also put in 8Gb + 4Gb in and it still can only see 8Gb.

It would be nice if Codly could give us more details and if the BIOS on his laptop can see 16Gb RAM. Anyone else successfully using 16Gb ? If YES can you take a picture of your BIOS to show us and also attach some system specs.

I have the i5 M540 Processor. A look at the Arrandale data sheet tells me that the maximum RAM is 8GB. You have an i&. Go to intel.com, find the datasheet for your CPU and see how much RAM is supported.
