if your running vista is could be the system restore. every time you make a program change vista tracks that change and alots so much space for changes. I noticed that on my install copy.

no mine got to a certain point then stopped taking up any more space you can go in and turn it off ( not recommended came in handy for me a time or 2) but you can also scale back the storage space if you want.

i doubt that 5gb of memory was used in system restore. not sure about vista but xp allocates a maximum of 10 percent of the drive for this feature.

i think you've downloaded some "questionable stuff" and many were stored in some location and is kept there especially while copying over. this is true with rar files. my solution would be going to http://www.ccleaner.com/ and download the file called "crap cleaner." run it and report back to us. the program will remove files that are supposed to be removed, all temporary internet stored files, cookies, etc. once you get the hang of it you can configure to specifically delete files. it's registry cleaner is also very safe.

and yes it works with vista and does not contain any kind of malware

I only downloaded Open office and that took up not even a gig of space but I think its just the thing when you save around 4 gigs of space and will save it for later in case you need to retrace the information

Juke you said your drive was a 100+ gb right 10% of that would be 10+gb if my math isnt to rusty. hahahaha im just giving you a hard time. the feature to see if that is your problem is in system tools system restore that should be the right location

There is an option in the Disk Cleanup to delete all but the last System Restore point. This will help you recover the missing disk space.

errr... no way that 5 gigs were taken up by registry information of system restore. took me 3 years to fill 300 megs. it has to be temporary files that did not remove properly as i explained earlier anyway, as long as your happy.....

System Restore is a lot more than just registry information. It is all of the files that were changed, too. Think about it a minute, if all System Restore did was back up the registry info, how would it be possible to roll back changes you make to the OS? It would need to ask you to locate that old driver you just overwrote when you tried the latest and greatest beta xyz driver you just tried and realized it didn't work on your machine. But it doesn't ask you to do that. It saves the files for you.

So, it is possible to consume 5 gig rather quickly with system restore, if you go about un-installing the myriad of bloatware apps on these machines. But it is space EASILY recovered via an advanced option in Disk Cleanup.
