    RISKS with Sony Refurb Notebooks?

    Wondering about those of you who had experience with the Sony Refurb notebooks. My understanding is that they are basically new old model, but come with only 90 days warranty.

    THAT is the factor that scares me - the 90 day warranty as Sony repair is very expensive out of warranty.

    Anyone comment on the risk vs the reduced price?

    And does Sony sell extended warranty if the refurb is purchased from a vendor rather than Sonystyle? Cost?

    Don't be scared. They are mostly new. I have never had a single problem with new or refurbished VAIO. Usually I have about 3 VAIO's in a household. Reduced price only a positive, no risk at all. Good luck!

    PS: What model are you planning to get?

    My Z has had zero issues and it was a refurb, looked brand new with no scratches or dings.

    My first notebook was a refurb Sony, the modem never did work right, but it didn't matter.

    Generally though, electronics tend to either work right from the start, or they don''t work at all. It's the mechanical parts that tend to fail over time or later on such as fans, hard disks and dvd-roms. Which are relatively easy and cheap to fix yourself so long as they are typical parts (no SSD or 1.8in drives).

    Thinking of the Sony TZ...

    I've owned about three dozen laptops, and a fair number of them have failed under warranty. This is true even without abuse. (i.e. Thinkpad, Sony, Dell, Compaq and so on.)
