    Guys,

    I have the following problem:
Sony Vaio VGN-FW370J with Win Vista Home Premium 64 with Aptio Utility.

I do have realtek hd audio card and this card should have digital output. My gf has a toshiba satellite with the same card and she has it but I don't. I called sony and they replied (twice with different technicians) that this feature is not available on this model. Both audio cards have the same chip so I suspect that this feature is disabled hw. It is not a driver problem. The driver does not install the Realtek Audio Manager so within the OS there is no way to enable it.
    Any thoughts here?
Any help would be highly appreciated.
    Thank you.

If by digital output you mean the HDMI, first make sure the HDMI cable is connected. Then go into Control Panel => Hardware & Sound => Sound. Highlight the Digital Output Device (HDMI) and click on Set Default and click OK. If sound still doesn't go through, disconnect and connect the HDMI cable again.

I'm pretty sure he means switching the headphone plug from analog headphone output to digital (SPDIF) signals.
As far as I know, VAIO models don't have this functionality, even though the audio chipset supports it.

Unless your speaker amp can upmix 2 channel analog audio (i.e. has a built-in Dolby Surround decoder), you will only get 2 channel sound.

Of course, there are alternatives, like a Creative X-Fi expresscard combined with an extra Creative 5.1/7.1 breakout box for the X-Fi card, but that's going to set you back quite a few bucks, and the sound quality is (IMO) worse.

If it's for movies, you can hook the HDMI up to an AV receiver, in which case you'll get as many outputs as the AV receiver supports.
